Alzheimer's is a difficult condition characterised by memory loss, confusion and communication difficulties.

It is often found in old age, but may also affect younger adults.

The cause is a loss of nervous tissue in the brain, which effectively shrinks in size. Although a certain amount of shrinkage is expected in old age, in Alzheimer's this is accelerated and increased.

Various symptoms may ensue, but the commonest are memory loss and progressive confusion and the inability to communicate or perform higher mental functions.

The condition is distressing for the patient's family and friends, but the patient is often oblivious to his / her state or mind, which is often a blessing.

Conventional medicine has little if anything to offer in the way of treatment, and often nervous system relaxants or even strong tranquilisers are used to subdue and sedate the patient.

Alzheimer's, dementia and memory loss has been linked to poor cerebral circulation, and there are ways of improving this, using herbal medicines or other therapies.

The condition has also been linked with heavy metal toxicity, and likely culprits include Aluminium or Mercury, or others.

We usually recommend a number of tests to evaluate the condition, and to assess in particular the nutritional status of the patient, and to exclude heavy metal poisoning.

A number of therapies may be helpful, and although some benefits may result from Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine or Reflexology (amongst others) the most promising therapies is Electro-Magnetic Therapy.

We usually recommend a Vitamin and Mineral test for most of our patients, as vitamin or mineral deficiencies can contribute to many health problems.

It is not always necessary to carry out any tests in this condition, as it may be possible to obtain good relief from the symptoms with a number of therapies.

What Advice Do You Get?

The treatments recommended will depend on the results of any tests carried out.

Nutritional, herbal and homoeopathic medicines may be useful.

Individual treatment programmes may be complex, and may need some commitment to follow successfully. Dietary changes together with a number of supplements, herbal and / or homoeopathic medicines to take every day, together with weekly treatments may be required for a period of at least 10 – 12 weeks.
