Introduction

'No nation on Earth realises exactly what Wellon's potential is, they are all lost in the contemplation of their own historical martial prowess. Any military away from Mother Earth is written off as a colonial militia of unsophisticated hicks with rifles. France got taught a lesson by the Elysians, but failed to recognise it. Germany still fools itself about its capability to bring Heidelsheimat to heel, let alone Freihafen.

'Even the British, who should know better, like to believe that they are holding Wellon's hand as she takes her first stumbling steps towards military maturity. We fail to see that the Wellonese have learnt from us, adapted what we know and are, even as we speak, beginning to teach us.

'One day soon we may see what the true potential of Wellon, and indeed the other nascent Tiranean nations, actually is and I pray that it is as allies, not enemies. For our eclipse by Wellon in the 24th Century may be as absolute as our eclipse by America in the 20th.'

Extract from the prestigious De Lancey Lecture at Ashton University, New Camelot 2295 by Sir Paul Illingsworth, British High Commissioner to Wellon

Introduction

Wellon is humanity's largest independent extra-solar state, and whilst relatively un-militarised compared to the Terran Powers is still an important military player. Like Australia, Canada and New Zealand, Wellon has a military tradition descended from that of the British but modified over time in the light of its own unique circumstances. Today Wellon is a significant military power on Tirane. If it lacks the force projection assets for major confrontations overseas it possesses more than enough combat power to secure her territorial integrity.

The most significant change in Wellon's defence policy in recent years has been the contribution of the Wellon Expeditionary Force to the defence of the French Arm against the alien Kafers. Fighting under the command of the British and alongside other Commonwealth nations the Wellonese have learned quickly. Indeed their large reserves of trained manpower has seen the Wellonese become the second largest continent in the Commonwealth Expeditionary Forces and even more troops may be sent to relieve British military overstretch.
