French Army: 2300AD

L'Armée Territoriale de Tirane

Introduction

The Armée Territoriale de Tirane (ATT) is France's military force on Tirane. It is based in Nouvelle Provence which is an integral part of Metropolitan France. The ATT has two components; 3 regular corps and a defence force comprising second line divisions raised from each of the 11 regions of the Département. Néo-Provençaux soldiers and units are becoming increasingly important in the wider army and several units are serving off-world on Earth and on the French Arm.

Narrative

The Manchurian PoWs were shell-shocked, slightly incredulous. With the Franco-Russians and their Central Asian puppets in full flight they hadn't expected such resistance, indeed hadn't encountered it for some time. The Manchurian regiment had been collecting straggling French conscripts as prisoners in large numbers since the Battle of Omsk and thought the French Army to be finished.

The newly arrived Néo-Provençaux Cuirassiers swiftly disabused them of this notion. Highly trained before deploying to Earth these regulars were well adapted to the sweeping steppe conditions. They were also fresh and unaffected by the malaise and defeatism infecting the rest of the Armée de l'Asie Centrale. The 18th Cuirassiers delivered several bloody noses to the Manchurians, lost half their AC-8's but managed to save the 8th Corps from total destruction.

It was a rearguard action worthy of the highest praise, but only a handful of allied cognoscente got to know about it. The Manchurians hold the fight of the 18th Cuirassiers in the highest regard and use it as an example in their Staff College. That, the respect of an enemy, is perhaps the greatest honor the Cuirassiers from Provence Nouveau could ever have hoped for, but was little recompense for their dead comrades.

Role and Commitments

The ATT commands all of France's forces on the world of Tirane. These are based almost entirely in Nouvelle Provence which shares the continent of Arcadie with Azania's colony of Tundukubwa and independent Freihafen which was once Bavaria's largest colony.

The ATT has three main components. A rapid reaction corps, two regular corps, a territorial defence force and there is also a small special forces element. The rapid reaction corps is composed of a mixture of Metropolitan, both Tiranean and Terran, Marine and Légion Étrangère forces and fulfils much the same role as the FAR on Earth. The two regular corps are almost entirely manned by Metropolitan troops and share the same organisation as those in the Armée d'Afrique. The DOTNP is the territorial defence force which is raised by a ballot or voluntary service from the regions.

The prime role of the ATT is the defence of French territory and French interests on Tirane. In recent years this has meant involvement in the affairs of Freihafen. France protected the colony's neutrality during the war with Germany and has supported the independent nation since. The economic synergy between Nouvelle Provence and Freihafen is one of the main generators of wealth on Tirane. Defence links with the Freiwehr are close and include bilateral training exercises as well the dispatch of dedicated training teams.

The ATT has also been involved in the internal politics of the colony. During the period of rule by the Junta the ATT intervened to remove the incumbent Governor. This was a move that aroused great resentment in Nouvelle Provence and nearly created an independence movement. Today the chastened ATT stays well away from politics. The DOTNP is allowed to intervene with aid to the civil authority but only under civilian direction. Much like the US National Guard the regional divisions can be mobilised by the local government within that area. Mobilising them, or regular troops, in another region is a more difficult and time consuming task.

The ATT has also gained a role as a reserve force for the French Army as a whole. Néo-provençales units were involved in the Central Asian War and War of German Reunification. Since the Kafer War began some battalions from the ATT have served on the French Arm, but this number has sky-rocketed since the Invasion. A Corps HQ and a number divisions from Nouvelle Provence have been employed in the Armée de Liberation and seen heavy fighting on Kimanjano and Beta Canum.

INDEX

6e Corps

6e Corps is one of the two main manoeuvre forces protecting Nouvelle Provence. Currently it is the strongest French corps on Tirane and hasn't been called upon for troops to reinforce the French Arm. The 6e Corps is deployed in the south of the county and is based at Nouvelle Ouagadougou (. It is handily placed to intervene in Freihafen across the River Limite or in Tundukubwa across the southern passes. Lastly it could also 'reach' forward to Tunghu if required.

The corps is designed to fight as a single body, with its DMs and DAM screening forwards, DB ready to destroy strong points or key locations in the enemy line and with the DIs providing rear area security and infantry capability for urban operations. Its divisions can also be deployed as tailored force packages when required.

4e Division Blindée

The 4e DB is a front-line heavy armoured division, and is based near the city of Durance. The division is one of the very few forces on Tirane equipped with tracked HBTs and has substantial combat power.

6e Division de Marche

The 6e DM has become tasked as the ATT's central reserve, although still nominally a part of the 6e Corps. It is fully equipped with the latest models of AC-12 and ACVI-4 AFVs and was surprised not to be called forward for service in the Armée de Libération. The division is based at Ouidah in La Croix.

8e Division de Marche

The 8e DM is one of the most famous formations in Nouvelle Provence. It is descended from the ad-hoc Division de Marche de Tirane (DMT) that was the first formed division of Néo-Provençales troops to see action in the Central Asian Republic, gaining its nickname of 'Les Démons Tiranais'. The DMT was again despatched to Earth for the war against Germany but due to numerous set-backs it was too late to see action although it served on the Rhine for a year. In the post-War re-organisation the division gained its current designation.

The division has been disappointed in missing out on the deployment to the French Arm. It is stationed near Nouvelle Ouagadougou and is equipped with AC-12 and ACVI-4. It holds frequent exercises with the Freiwehr forces of I Korps stationed over the River Limité.

II/1e Régiment de Chasseurs Tiranais – II/1e RCT – BFA

201e Division d'Infanterie

The 201e DI is one of 6e Corps' two assigned infantry divisions. These are regular infantry units trained for operations in urban and other terrain difficult for hover vehicles to operate in. They are currently lightly mechanised with ABR-74 and VCIR wheeled AFVs, which provide a measure of protection but shouldn't be matched against first rank hover AFVs, but are transitioning to the EBR-97’s now beginning production in Nouvelle Provence.

The ATT DI's bore the brunt of patrolling duties during the Junta period, something the civilian population of some areas still remembers. The 201e DI is based in Escalier des Etoiles.

INDEX

7e Corps

7e Corps is 6e Corps' counterpart in the north and west of the country. It has been somewhat weakened by the despatch of the 9e DM to the French Arm. The role of the Corps is to back up 6e Corps in the south, deny passage of the mountain passes in the event of conflict with Nouvelle Provence's neighbours and finally to provide forces to reinforce the French Army off-world. 7e Corps is based in Lancon-Nouvelle-Provence.

8e Division Blindée

8e DB is France's other heavy armoured division on Tirane. It is based in Mirambeau and is skilled in operations in urban areas although it also practices conventional operations. Its location away from the main concentration of the Corps sometimes leads to problems in coordinating high level training.

11e Régiment de Chasseurs à Roues de Tirane – 11e RBT – BCR

5e Régiment de Cuirassiers Blindée de Tirane – 5e RBT – BCC

            I/21e Régiment d'Infanterie de Tirane – I/21e RIT – BFAM

7e Division de Marche

With the absence of the 9e DM on the French Arm the 7e DM is the 7e Corps' main manoeuvre asset. It is based in Lancon-Nouvelle-Provence and is widely regarded as the best drilled DM in the ATT. The 7e DM is also responsible for training support of French Army units deploying to the region for training. 27e RBT has been deployed to the Armée d’Aurore.

The 9e DM is currently deployed on Kimanjano as part of the Armée de Libération. It is normally based in Djibouti el-Jedid.

5e Division Aéromobile

This unit is the counterpart of the 1e DAM. It is based at Lancon alongside Corps HQ and 7e DM.

I/9e Régiment de Chasseurs Tiranais – I/9e RCT – BFA

202e Division d'Infanterie

Another regular infantry division, this unit served on Earth during the War of German Reunification where it was one of the few units to enter German territory when it took part in the abortive attack on Frankfurt. Its performance far exceeded those of the conscript ATH DIs fighting alongside it and gained the respect of the Saxon divisions it fought against. The division is currently based on the outskirts of Dakar.

INDEX

16e Corps

The 16e Corps has been recently formed to replace the 8e Corps HQ which has become a part of the Armée de Liberation. It includes many of the HQ and logistics formations left behind by 8e Corps but has a relatively inexperienced command structure. The formation has also taken over 8e Corps buildings in Douala to the south of Mirambeau.

16e Corps commands the Armée de Tirane's rapid reaction and intervention forces which were formerly known as the Force d' Action Rapide de Tirane. However along with the Corps HQ two of the Corps' three divisions were deployed up-Arm and half of the remaining division sent to Earth to fill a gap there. Consequently two crack mountain divisions have been transferred to the Corps.

2e Division Légère Blindée

This division is OPCON the Armée de Libération and is stationed on Kimanjano. It is normally stationed near the city of Aix-en-Nouvelle Provence.

1e Brigade, 20e Division Parachutiste

The 20e DP is the theatre commander's infantry heavy reaction force, normally comprising two brigades of paratroops from Tirane and Earth. The 2e Brigade has deployed to Earth leaving the 1e Brigade to cover Tirane. The remaining Brigade has one light armoured, two infantry and one combat walker battalions as well as a slice of other assets. The unit prides itself on its elite status and is based in Mirambeau.

This division is OPCON the Armée de Libération and is stationed on Beta Canum 4. It is normally based at Lome in the Ile de Tirane.

204e Division Légère d'Infanterie

204e DLI is organised identically to a conventional DI within the Armée de Tirane. The difference is that its units are trained in fighting in hostile environments. The DLI specialise in Mountain and Jungle warfare. There vehicles are generally un-armoured and the battalions will normally operate exclusively in the dismounted role. The 204e DI is based at Sette Cama and exercises frequently in the Mandara or Feu Froid Massifs as well as on the great rivers of the region and down to the Pays Verdoyant. 204e DI regards itself as a generalist light role formation.

Défence Operationelle Territoriale de Nouvelle Provence

The DOTNP is Nouvelle Provence's second line defensive force, and also provides for aid to the civil power assignments. Its formations are regionally recruited and based. Its soldiers are usually short service volunteers, although some regions lack for enough volunteers and fill the spaces with conscription by ballot. These units are light infantry and have a mixture of VCIR and un-armoured trucks for transport but other wise usually follow the typical organisation of a French DI. It is expected that their transport fleets will be refreshed when the regular DIs transition to EBR-97 and hand down their VCIR and ABRs.

The DOTNP divisions are normally headquartered in the capital of the region they are stationed in, however its subordinate units are usually deployed across the regions.
