L'Armée Territoriale

de l'Afrique Centrale

The ATAC is the French Army covering the French Empire's equatorial African territories and Djibouti. The ATAC lacks any immediate threat which it must opposed but the Army is frequently committed to the teaming cities of the area to counter civil disturbances. Similarly long-running but low key insurgencies are a common factor in the area.

5e Corps

The 5e Corps covers the territories of Djibouti, Gabon, Cameroon and Chad. Obviously as Djibouti is not geographically linked to the other areas the 11e DB and 8e DAM have a fair degree of operational independence. The rest of the Corps is dedicated to internal security tasks and protecting the Beanstalk in Libreville, which is also the location of the Corps HQ.

11e Division Blindée

The 11e DB is stationed and recruited from Djibouti. This French territory greatly expanded in the 21st Century in the aftermath of the 3rd World War and as a result of French interventions in the Ethiopian Civil War. Consequently there is no little resentment of the French felt in Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopia. Outright fighting has been rare, but all three countries have tried to initiate and supply secessionist movements within the occupied territories. This has generally had little success, but the French are wary of the large Ethiopian Army to the south.

10e Division de la Marche

The 10e DM is stationed in Yaoundé in the Cameroun, but elements of it can be found in Chad, Biafra and Ubangi Shari. It is generally used for 'flag showing' duties in these territories, but is frequently called in to supplement the Gendarmerie and Infantry Division in quelling internal disturbances. 10e DM retains the old AC-8 hovertank.

20e Division de la Marche

The 20e DM has it barracks on the outskirts of Libreville. It is used for mobile, forward defence of the Beanstalk. However as no-one has ever attempted anything larger than sabotage attacks on the Beanstalk the 20e DM has become to be regarded as the reserve division of the 5e Corps. As such it frequently detaches Demi-Brigades to the command of other formations. The 20e DM has modern equipment and the AC-12.

103e Division d' Infanterie

The 103e DI is also stationed outside of Libreville, and its primary mission is the protection of the Beanstalk. However its troops are more likely to be called in to control rioting in the sprawling slums outside the capital.

104e Division d' Infanterie

The 104e DI is recruited from the relatively peaceful region of Chad. One of the division's brigades normally patrols the eastern border with the UAR's Sudanese province. The simmering civil war between Islamic and Christian populations is at a low level currently but can flare up rapidly. The rest of the division is normally deployed anywhere in the 5e Corps area, where the skill of the Chadian Tirailleurs in containing street fighting makes them popular with senior officers, but not Cameroon or Gabon civilians.

11e Corps

The 11e Corps is responsible for the defence of the southern part of French Central Africa, primarily the territories of Zaïre and Katanga. With exception of a long-running campaign of civil disobedience in the east by Rwandan and Burundian Tustsi, Zaire is relatively peaceful. Kinshasa's large paramilitary Gendarmerie has relived the need for military intervention in rioting in all but the most extreme cases. However forces in Katanga have been fighting a long running proxy war with Anzanian backed forces in the area. Both members of the ESA, Paris and Capetown have good relations but local administrators allow their rivalries to express themselves in a covert war either side of the border.

Whilst the other three Corps of the Armée d' Afrique tend to keep the composition of their units static through the years, 11e Corps regularly rotates its battalions and has also begun a series of exchange postings with 5e Corps. The Corps commander hopes to extend this program to the other French Armies on Earth, and possibly to the colonies.

7e Division Blindée

The 7e DB is the heavy combat division for the 11e Corps and is stationed to the south of Kinshasa, close to Angola which is its most likely theatre should the border war turn hot. The 7e DB has intervened many times in Angola in the last century in support of French national interests.

105e Division d' Infanterie

The 105e DI is based in Kisangani in eastern Zaïre. It is frequently deployed on tasks to counter the increasing influence of Tutsi secessionists in the border region. However the Tutsi's non-violent methods have gained them an increasingly large profile in the international media, and can sometimes make the French troops look like blundering thugs.

109e Division d' Infanterie

The 109e DI is deployed in the 'Katagan Finger' that stretches down into Azanian territory and touches the Zambezi. The Finger is frequently infiltrated by Azanian backed insurgents and consequently the 109e DI sees much action and occasionally strays into Azanian territory in 'Hot pursuit'. This division is highly skilled in bush warfare, and one of its battalions (5e RTK) is due to depart for a tour on Aurore.
