The Royal Air Force is Britain's strategic air combat force which also has a tactical role alongside the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy and in support of the British Army. The RAF has the lead in the air defence of the British Isles and in the strategic projection of air power. It also has responsibility for operational and strategic airlift and retains a vestigial interface capability. The RAF and RN work hand in hand in the provision of tactical air support to the army and in maritime reconnaissance and strike.
