Empires and Slavery  (03 October 2017)

"Every Kingdom and Empire which ever existed used slaves of some kind. ... Slavery is, in the strictest sense of the term, any system which allows individuals to own, buy and sell other individuals as items of property. ... Slaves came from various sources: they could be captured during wars, enslaved during occupation of their country or be hunted for trade. They might be criminals, abandoned children or families who gave themselves as slaves during hard times in return for food and shelter..."

The Islamic Slave Trade

YOUTUBE:  Islam's Dark History of Slavery (Whitewashed and Forgotten)  (05 September 2018)

"We always talk about hose Europeans enslaved immense numbers of Africans. We usually don't talk about the parties actually involved or not involved in that slave trade. What we also don't talk about are other slave trades that were even bigger and lasted longer, like the Eastern (Islamic) Slave Trade. Western media choose selective moral outrage, and while Western schools teach their youth about their own faults, the Islamic World is far from being honest. Therefore I choose to talk about this dark history, and I hope to spread more awareness so that more and more people can know and talk about the cruelties of the Islamic world."

The Islamic Trade in European Slaves  (11 August 2017)

"Modern Western culture, with its Anglo-centric worldview, has an almost obsessive preoccupation with the European trade in African slaves, a trade that commenced in the late 15th century and ended in the mid-19th, but seems to have little knowledge of or interest in the equally intense Muslim trade in European slaves during the same epoch. This is a strange state of affairs, given the fact that, in general, the Europeans enslaved by the Muslims between the 15th and 19th centuries were treated appallingly, and the trade had a long-term and devastatingly impact upon large areas of the continent..."

Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters  (15 September 2016)

"Today, institutional slavery conjures images of pre-Civil War Southern ownership of African slaves. However, slavery is an ancient practice dating from ancient Eqypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as early Amer-Indian empires in Mexico and Central America. It was also well established and ideologically sanctioned in the Muslim world from the days of Mohammed. Concurrently with African enslavement in the Americas, a flourishing slave trade existed from 1500 to 1800 of white Christian Europeans by the Muslims of North Africa's Barbary Coast..."

YOUTUBE:  Islamic Slavery in Africa  (16 July 2015)

"The story of slavery that we are told never includes the role of Islam. The slaves were captured by jihadists and brought to the coast. We have a detailed record of how this took place. Prosperous regions of Africa were destroyed by the Arab slave traders. Out of the slaves that were captured, only 20% of them ever made to the pens on the coast to be sold. There is an oddity in the language used in historical record. The words Muslim, Islam and jihad are never used, but only referred to. We will never understand the slave trade until we understand the Islamic doctrine of slavery."

10 Facts About the Arab Enslavement of Black People Not Taught in Schools  (02 June 2014)

"The number of people enslaved by Muslims has been a hotly debated topic, especially when the millions of Africans forced from their homelands are considered. Others believe over 20 million enslaved Africans alone had been delivered through the trans-Sahara route to the Islamic world..."

Denials of Islamic Slavery  (22 August 2013)

"One of the most controversial aspects of Islam is its doctrine of slavery. It incites controversy because slavery in the modern world is clearly considered a contemptible practice. In Islamic doctrine however, it isn't. For centuries, abolitionist groups from the West and non-Western world lobbied strenuously to see slavery become abolished in Western colonies from Africa to India and beyond. The formal abolishment of slavery in Muslim countries was not enacted ... until the intervention of the West..."

American slavers rarely had to go into inland to capture slaves, they were already waiting there, courtesy of some Muslim ruler, and/or slave broker. Letters to The Times  (01 May 2019)  (£)

Letter from Jeremy Black, Professor of History, Exeter University:  "Sir, Cambridge's proposal to devote resources neither to teaching nor to research but to virtue signalling over slavery is not only questionable for a charity but also an endorsement of notions of hereditary guilt. Leaving aside the prevalence of coercive labour systems across much of the world, including Africa, throughout much of history, and the major role of African polities in the enslavement and sale of people, there is a preference for beating up on the past rather than addressing slavery in the world today. Public slavery in the shape of those oppressed under totalitarian rule, for example in North Korea, is particularly serious ... Reparation for a distant and very widespread practise is absurd, both practically and philosophically. That the idea is gaining traction is an instance of the strange politics of these times."

Letter from Dr Allan Chapman, Oxford University:  "Sir, I see that the University of Cambridge is preparing a season of ritualised self-flagellation for its former slave trade investments. Yet it was two 18th-century Cambridge graduates, Thomas Clarkson and William Wilberforce, who first drew attention to the moral enormity of one human being owning another. Their crusade led to the abolition of the slave trade in 1807, then after 1834, the abolition of slavery itself in all British dominions. Great Britain was the first country in the world to abolish slavery. And what lay at the heart of this crusade were not vacuous 'Rights of Man' revolutionaries but Christian Evangelicals such as Clarkson, Wilberforce and their friends. But will Clarkson, Wilberforce and the abolitionists be remembered in the forthcoming guilt-fest?"

"Cambridge University, formerly a distinguished seat of learning, is funding two grievance archaeologists to go through its archives in order to discover how guilty it needs to feel about slavery - and how much it owes in compensation ... Who knows what what evidence [they] might find? If they're really diligent, they might come across the name of one William Wilberforce, formerly an undergraduate at St John's College. But if they've any sense they'll keep it quiet: the point of the exercise to to lament white privilege, promote race-baiting, and, no doubt, to create employment for favoured minorities. Bringing up the name of a white, wealthy, middle-class male Cambridge alumnus who did more than anyone to stop the trans-Atlantic slave trade would only confuse the issue..."

Cambridge to Examine Its Links to Slave Trade  (30 April 2019)  (£)

"The University of Cambridge has announced a two-year inquiry into its historical links to the salve trade that will explore whether it should pay reparations ... Cambridge ... said that two full-time post-doctoral researchers, based in the Centre of African Studies, would look through the university's archives and other records to 'uncover how the institution might have gained from slavery and the exploitation of labour'..."

The Bible and Slavery

YOUTUBE:  Does the Bible Support Slavery?  (02 August 2016)

"During the darkest era in the history of our country Christian slave owners would use the Bible to support slavery. But is that what the Bible teaches?..."

YOUTUBE:  Slavery in the Old Testament: A Misunderstood Ethic  (03 July 2015)

"Despite the fact that the Apostle Paul's declaration that 'there is no favoritism' with God (Ephesians 6:9) and that 'there is neither slave nor free' (Galatians 3:28) ultimately undermined global slavery, critics of Christianity often claim that the Bible promotes slavery. In this lecture, Anthony Uvenio and Nick Mitchell of New York Apologetics examine some Old Testament passages dealing with slavery."

YOUTUBE:  The Bible and Slavery: Answering 'Atheists'  (04 February 2015)

"'[U]nbelievers' often bring up the issue of slavery and the Bible. They claim that since the Bible permits slavery, it is therefore immoral and should not be followed. Now, leaving aside the fact that if atheism were true, nothing would be wrong, including slavery, since all you would have is one random biological organism that appeared on a random rock owning another random biological organism, without any objective standard condemning such a concept, it is nevertheless important to address this argument. This is because when Biblical slavery is mentioned by such people it is meant to incite an emotional reaction connected with the racist slavery of the American South in the 18th and 19th centuries, or the brutal instances of slavery in the ancient world..."

YOUTUBE:  Doesn't the Bible Support Slavery?  (24 November 2014)

"Slavery has become a hot-button issue in today's culture. Oftentimes, critics of the Bible come to a Christian and they bring up the issue of slavery in an attempt to discredit the Bible. But here's the crux of the issue:..."

YOUTUBE:  Did God Sanction Slavery in the Old Testament?  (14 September 2013)

NB: Starts at 1:58.  "When we read in the Old Testament about slavery, we see the term 'slave' or 'slavery', and most people typically associate this with ante-bellum slavery in the American South; it is pre-civil war slavery. And when we look at what some have said about this - think of the writer of Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe, who said this:..."

The Bible, Slavery and Morality  (25 July 2007)

"One criticism often levelled against Christianity in particular and the Bible in general is that both have appeared to tolerate slavery. This objection is used to suggest that Biblical morality is no better than any other, and is offered as another reason why we should reject belief in God..."

Slaves to Sin

Our Spiritual Human Slavery  (24 November 2013)

"By now most of you would have heard about the shocking story of three women held captive for thirty years ... As tragic as this case is, I want to look at it in terms of some spiritual truths. Here we had people who were captives - some for their entire lives - but they may have gotten to the place where they did not realise they were enslaved, or at least made little attempt to escape. They seemed as though held by 'invisible chains'. That is a deplorable state to be in. But spiritually speaking, it pretty well summarises the condition of all of humanity..."

The Doctrine of Slavery: An Islamic Institution  by Bill Warner  (2010)

"The modern historical theory of slavery is that white men brought Africans to the Western hemisphere, where they were sold for profit and put to work as slaves. The modern theory is true as far as it goes, but it does not go nearly far enough. Slavery begins way before the 300-year period when whites bought slaves from the Muslim wholesalers on the West coast of Africa. For 1400 years Islam waged jihad in Africa, India and Europe and enslaved non-Muslims. Islam ran the slave markets, not only on the West coast of Africa, but also in North Africa and East Africa. The foundation for this odious business was the Islamic doctrine of slavery. Mohammed's example established the way to be the perfect slave trader and slave owner. He sold the slaves he captured to finance jihad. Actually Islam has a highly detailed doctrine of slavery. This book is a fascinating study of the ideology that supported the world's largest slave culture."

Slavery, Terrorism, and Islam: The Historical Roots and Contemporary Threat  by Peter Hammond  (2010)

"This is a fascinating, well illustrated and thoroughly documented response to the relentless anti-Christian propaganda that has been generated by Muslim and Marxist groups and by Hollywood film makers. As Karl Marx declared: 'The first battlefield is the re-writing of History!'"   /   "[The author] begins by documenting the close relationship between Islam and slavery and then chapter by chapter reveals the terrible cost of thirteen centuries of Islamic invasion, conquest and brutalisation"   /   "[The author] cuts through layers of misinformation and uncovers astonishing historical facts and details long buried by Islamic revisionists"   /   "For the sake of this generation, and coming ones, someone had to do what Dr Pater Hammond has just done; setting the record straight on the different role players in the slave trade."

The Stolen Village: Baltimore and the Barbary Pirates  by Des Ekin  (2006)

"In June 1631 pirates from Algiers and armed troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire, led by the notorious pirate captain Morat Rais, stormed ashore at the little harbour village of Baltimore in West Cork. They captured almost all the villagers and bore them away to a life of slavery in North Africa. The prisoners were destined for a variety of fates - some would live out their days chained to the oars as galley slaves, while others would spend long years in the scented seclusion of the harem or within the walls of the Sultan's palace. ... Only two of them ever saw Ireland again. The Sack of Baltimore was the most devastating invasion ever mounted by Islamist forces on Ireland or England. Des Ekin's exhaustive research illuminates the political intrigues that ensured the captives were left to their fate, and provides a vivid insight into the kind of life that would have awaited the slaves amid the souks and seraglios of old Algiers."

White Gold  by Giles Milton  (2004)

"This is the extraordinary story of Thomas Pellow and North Africa's one million European slaves. In the summer of 1716, a Cornish cabin boy named Thomas Pellow and fifty-one of his comrades were captured at sea by Barbary corsairs. Their captors - Captain Ali Hakem and his network of fanatical Islamic slave traders - had declared war on the whole of Christendom. Poked, prodded and put through their paces at the great slave markets of Morocco, thousands of Europeans were sold to the highest bidder. ... Thomas Pellow ... was one of the fortunate few who survived to tell his tale."

Testimony of an Irish Slave Girl (A Novel)  by Kate McCafferty  (2003)

"Thousands of Irish men, women and children were sold into slavery to work in the sugar-cane fields of Barbados in the 17th century... McCafferty has researched her theme well and, through Cot, shows us the terrible indignities and suffering endured."

Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters  by Robert C. Davis  (2003)

White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast, and Italy, 1500-1800.  "In this book Robert C. Davis uses many new historical sources to re-examine one of the least understood forms of human bondage in modern times - the systematic enslavement of white, Christian Europeans by the Muslims of North Africa's Barbary Coast. Far from the minor phenomenon that many have assumed it to be, white slavery in the Maghreb turns out, in Davis' account, to have had enormous consequences, ensnaring as many as a million victims from France and Italy to Spain, Holland, Great Britain, the Americas, and even Iceland in the centuries when it flourished between 1500 and 1800. Whether dealing with the methods used by slavers, the experience of slavery, or its destructive impact on the slaves themselves, Davis demonstrates the many, often surprising, similarities between this 'other' slavery and the much better known human bondage suffered at the very same time by black Africans in the Americas."
