Leaving aside the prevalence of coercive labour systems across much of the world, including Africa, throughout much of history, and the major role of African polities in the enslavement and sale of people, there is a preference for beating up on the past rather than addressing slavery in the world today. Public slavery in the shape of those oppressed under totalitarian rule, for example in North Korea, is particularly serious ... Reparation for a distant and very widespread practise is absurd, both practically and philosophically. That the idea is gaining traction is an instance of the strange politics of these times."

Letter from Dr Allan Chapman, Oxford University:  "Sir, I see that the University of Cambridge is preparing a season of ritualised self-flagellation for its former slave trade investments. Yet it was two 18th-century Cambridge graduates, Thomas Clarkson and William Wilberforce, who first drew attention to the moral enormity of one human being owning another. Their crusade led to the abolition of the slave trade in 1807, then after 1834, the abolition of slavery itself in all British dominions. Great Britain was the first country in the world to abolish slavery.
