People are ‘made for
companionship and group living’. As Buber put it, ‘all real living is
meeting’.
Many experience a basic dilemma
between ‘separateness’ and ‘relatedness’. At times we want ‘space’; at
others we feel a deep need to be with people.
We can choose between taking our place alongside whatever
confronts us and addressing it as 'you'; or we 'can hold ourselves apart
from it and view it as an object, an "it"'
