THE WOLFEN by
Whitley Strieber
The Wolfen, or werewolves, are the spine of this brilliant horror thriller. They're living right in Manhattan, packs and packs of them. Normally they prey on old defenceless folk who can be eaten and won't be missed. When two young policemen are unwisely slain, Detective George Wilson and Lady Detective Becky Neff are assigned to the case, but soon the werewolves in turn begin hunting the detectives. The werewolves are not men turned into wolves; they are a completely separate species with almost human faces, handlike claws, and superhuman intelligence resulting from fantastic powers of smell and hearing. Intriguingly, the author, who loves his wolves, conjures up sympathy and compassion for the Wolfen, horrendous as they are. © 1978 by Whitley Strieber

In the world that lies ahead of us all, reality and hallucination will merge and interchange. So when Max Renn saw the flesh of his stomach swell and redden as though a giant worm was moving beneath the skin, was that imagination - or reality? And when the skin split and the flesh parted like giant lips, soft and bloodied. When he could sink his fingers, his whole hand, deep inside, feeling and probing through the wall of his own stomach. As the juices, thick and warm, clung and sucked gently at his finger-tips, drawing him in. As the bile rose, hot with revulsion in his throat.... Was that a nightmare - or reality?
