Creon has gone to bury the body of Polyneices. After a hymn from the Chorus, appealing to their local god, Dionysus, a messenger appears. He has bad news. Creon's wife, who's overheard, demands to know the full story. The messenger tells how Creon duly buried the body, and then went to the rocky cave, to release Antigone. He heard his son's screams from deep inside the cave - where Antigone was already dead. She'd hanged herself, and Haemon was clinging to her body. When he saw his father, Haemon rushed at him with his sword but missed. Agonised, he stabbed himself, and died hugging the body of his beloved.
