Swedish Mopeds

Mike Crumpton

Örnen moped

I recently acquired two Swedish mopeds, about which I have no information, and I wondered whether any buzzers might be able to shed some light on them.  The first is a ‘Maraton’, made by AB J Benson, Malmo and is fitted with chain drive, clutch and a Ilo engine.  The second is an ‘Örnen’ (Eagle) made by AB John Hedbergs Maskinaffär, also of Malmo.  This machine is fitted with a Pilot engine and is unusual in that the transmission is by continuous V-belt from the engine to a huge pulley attached to the spokes of the back wheel.

A Swedish couple imported both machines in 1977 and import documents date them as 1954 and 1953 respectively.  Neither was ever registered in the UK, although both are complete and unseized and I hope to resurrect them soon.
