Dear Ed,

I read with interest the experience John Powell has had with his serviced Winged Wheel cylinder barrel.

It may be of interest that two types of barrel exist for these "whizzers":

  1. The early type had a cast iron cylinder head and relied on a ground or lapped seal with the barrel.
  2. The later type had an aluminium cylinder head and relied on a cast iron ring inserted in a machined groove in head as a seal.

The first and second types of barrel/heads cannot be interchanged.  The early cast iron head/barrel is in my opinion the best as it eliminated the head distortion of later type.

I have an early and later type myself.

Regards,
Ted Giles
