notion description where used
ascetic Ascetic comes from the Greek word for training. Compare with Exercise.

Asceticism has become equated with a particular form of negative thinking - from the denial of physical pleasure to the mortification of the flesh.

exercise Exercise comes from the Latin for Working Out. Compare with Ascetic.

In practice, Working Out often aims at Working In and Working Up (Body Building) as well as Working Away. It is a positive activity, which can have both positive and negative ends.

insight "Insight is a precondition of any lasting psychological change achieved in the analysis and all other factors are related to it. I mean here specifically psychoanalytical insight, that is: the acquiring of knowledge about one’s own unconscious through experiencing consciously, and, in most cases, being able to acknowledge explicitly and verbally, previously unconscious processes. To be of therapeutic value, it must be correct and it must be deep enough. It must reach to the deep layers of the unconscious and illuminate those early processes in which the pattern of internal and external relationships is laid down and in which the ego is structured. The deeper the layers of the unconscious reached, the richer and the more stable will be the therapeutic result."
H Segal, “The Curative Factors in Psychoanalysis” (1962), reprinted in H Segal, The Work of Hanna Segal  (New York: Jason Aronson, 1981) p 70
However, some psychoanalysts reject even this statement of the goals of psychoanalysis as being excessively rational and intellectual. According to Symington’s interpretation of Freud, insight is not the conscious reaching into the unconscious, but the unconscious forcing itself upon the conscious, and this insight often occurs simultaneously for analyst and analysand alike.
N Symington, The Analytic Experience: Lectures from the Tavistock  (London: Free Association Books, 1986)
