RHYL MINIATURE RAILWAY: NINETIETH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

SATURDAY 5TH MAY 2001

Supported by the Marine Lake Users

{John} Saturday 5th May will be a special day to celebrate the ninetieth anniversary of the opening of the railway. 4-4-2 John will be visting us just for this day, by courtesy of its owners, Jim and Helen Shackell of Oxfordshire.

John is one of the six locomotives built in Rhyl by Albert Barnes & Co, and operated on the railway from 1921 to 1969. This will be the first time since then that it has returned, and will also be the first occasion for thirty years that two Barnes locomotives have been seen together in steam.

{Effie} Our second guest locomotive will be Effie, visiting us by courtesy of its owner David Humphreys, and the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway.

Effie is a full size replica of a locomotive built by Sir Arthur Heywood in 1875. The replica was built by the Great Northern Staem Company, and was completed in 1999.

Although the prototype was mostly experimental, its designer must have known a thing or two even then, because the little engine has recently been hauling some quite heavy trains at Cleethorpes.
