At 9 p.m. on the 4th May, 1917, a man was thrown into the sea owing to his ship being torpedoed, it being very dark at the time. Charles Adams, deck hand on one of H.M. ships jumped in and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

At 12.30 p.m. on the 22nd November, 1916, a man in trying to board his ship fell into the harbour at Sunderland; a second man went in, but was unable to help him, and also got into danger. William Alder, a pilot, went in with a rope and supported both men until further help came and they were got out.

At 11 p.m. on the 31st August, 1917, a man in an attempt at suicide threw himself from one of H.M. ships into the sea at Saltash. Albert H. Allen, E.R.A., R.N., jumped in and held him till a boat reached them and they were picked up.

At 8 a.m. on the 25th May, 1917, a boat was blown up at sea by an enemy torpedo throwing the occupants into the water. Engineer-Sub-Lieutenant Albert Annett, R.N.R., went to the help of a man and boy who were in difficulty and kept them afloat till a boat reached them.

At 4.30 p.m. on the 2nd August, 1917, a man while bathing in Whitmore Bay, Barry Island, got into difficulty 300 yards out in a rough sea. Thomas Arch, P.C., went to his help and succeeded in bringing him to shore.

At 4 a.m. on the 28th April, 1917, a youth accidentally fell from a vessel into the Tyne at Willington, the depth being 25 to 30 feet. John W. Armstrong at once jumped in and got him back to the ship and he was pulled on board.

At 1.30 p.m. on the 7th July, 1917, a man was thrown into Auskerry Sound owing to his vessl being blown up by a mine. W.H. Armstrong, Skipper, R.N.R., jumped from his ship and succeeded in supporting him till they were picked up.

At 3.30 p.m. on the 21st January, 1917, a boy fell through the ice on a pond at Wishaw, the water being deep and the distance from the side 60 yards. George Baillie jumped in and having caught him they were got out with ladders.

At 8.30 a.m. on the 8th September, 1916, a man was thrown into the Firth of Forth owing to the swamping of a small boat. Engineer-Sub-Lieutenant John Barclay, R.N.R., jumped in from his ship and attempted to rescue him but failed.

At 3.45 p.m. on the 18th January, 1917, an old man when unmooring a boat fell into the sea at Innismurry Island, Sligo, the depth being 40 feet and the sea choppy. Michael Barry, Constable, Royal Irish Constabulary, jumped in and caught him, and he was got into a boat.

At 1 p.m. on the 1st August, 1917, two girls were bathing in the sea at Mullaghmore and got into difficulty, one being carried 30 yards out and the other 80 yards. Michael Barry Constable, R.I.C., went in and brought them to shore one at a time.

At 1.45 p.m. on the 22nd July, 1917, a youth named Cooper while bathing in a lodge at Entwistle got into difficulty. Percy Barton, aged 15, went in and twice tried to rescue him but failed.

At 3.30 p.m. on the 2nd October, 1917, an old man of 65 was drifting seaward in a waterlogged boat in the harbour at Langstone. Second Lieutenant C.F.A. Bird, Royal Engineers, swam out and kept him afloat for some time but had to let go and the man was drowned.

At 7 p.m. on the 9th August, 1917, two youths while bathing in the Thames at Clifton Hampden got into difficulty in 8 feet of water 15 yards from the side. James M. Boyce, Cadet, R.F.C., went in and was successful in bringing them out.

Brown, C., an Apprentice s.s. Farnham Case 43538

On the 19th May, 1917, the s.s. Farnham was struck at sea by an enemy torpedo, a number of the crew being thrown into the water. C. Brown, an apprentice, had secured a ladder, and this he gave up to a man who could not swim, and was himself picked up about an hour after.

At 3.30 p.m. on the 2nd February, 1917, two boys fell through the ice on Springfied Dam, Belfast, the depth of water being ten feet. James Buchanan, aged 13, and David Spears went in and succeeded in bringing both out, Bernard Robinson, P.C., restoring one of them who was unconscious.

At 1.40 p.m. on the 17th June, 1917, a punt with four persons on board was swamped in the Thames at Kingston, the incident taking place in mid river. Captain Denis J. Burke, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, who, although wounded, swam out and brought two of them within reach of the bank and then swam back and rescued the other two.

At 2.30 p.m. on the 15th March, 1917 two nurses were thrown into the Tigris owing to a collision bertween two boats, the depth being 20 feet with a strong current. Captain T.M. Carpendale, Indian Army, jumped in with a lifebuoy and kept them afloat until a tug picked them up.

At 11 p.m. on the 26th October, 1916, a man was seen in the water in the Staits of Dover in a helpless state about 40 yards from one of H.M. ships. Sub-Lieutenant J.W.G. Chater, R.N., and J.F. Trevett, A.B., both jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

At 11.30 a.m. on the 11th September, 1917, a man while at work on a ship in the Medway at Chatham fell overboard, the depth being 20 feet with a strong tide. Donald Clarke, A.B., jumped in from the ship but failed to reach him before he sank.

At 7 a.m. on the 28th February, 1917, a man fell into the Sandon Dock, Liverpool, in a dangerous position between a vessel and the quay, the depth being 35 feet. Private John G. Clare, Liverpool Regiment, went in but failed to rescue him. Corporal G.A. Colman then jumped in and got a rope round him and he was pulled out.

At 2.15 p.m. on the 14th August, 1917, a man accidentally fell overboard from a submarine in the harbour at Blyth. Kenneth T. McK. Cooper, Petty Officer, R.N., went after him, and with much difficulty succeeded in saving him.

At 10.40 p.m. on the 19th February, 1917, a man in the darkness and fog walked into the dock at Grimsby, the depth being 20 feet and very cold. Lieutenant Charles G. Coull, R.N.R., jumped in and kept him afloat till further help came and they were pulled out.

At 1.5 a.m. on the 26th August, 1917, a man walked into the Union Dock Cutting at Grimsby in the darkness, the depth being 15 feet. Richard Cowling, Engineman, R.N.R., jumped in and succeeded in bringing him out in an unconscious state.

At 8 a.m. on the 3rd October, 1916, two chinese workmen were struck down by foul gas in the hold of s.s. Shengking, at Shanghai. John Mathias went to their help, but was also overcome. John A. Craig went down three times and succeeded in saving them one after the other.

At 2 p.m. on the 9th February, 1917, a native porter while assisting in building a bridge accidentally fell into a river in East Africa, the depth being 15 feet. Bombardier W. Croft, R.M.A., went in and was successful in saving him.

Cummins, Harold L., Lieutenant, Royal Indian Marine Case 43115

At 11.30 a.m. on the 18th July, 1916, a coal-trimmer fell overboard from a hospital ship into the Tigris and was being quickly carried away by the current. Lieutenant Harold L. Cummins, Royal Indian Marine, jumped in and caught him and then swam with him to the bank.

At 11.40 a.m. on the 31st October, 1917, a man fell from a stage on a ship's side into the sea in Pembroke Reach. Sub-Lieutenant C.M.V.F. Dalrymple-Hay, R.N., jumped in fully clothed and kept him up for ten minutes, when a boat reached them.

On the afternoon of the 17th August, 1917, two soldiers were bathing in the sea on the French coast and got into difficulty in 10 feet of water. Lieutenant R.H. D'Elboux, Second Lieutenant S.A.N. Ward, and Private H. Bishop, North Lancashire Regiment, went in and were successful in saving them.

At 3 p.m. on the 20th January, 1917, a trawler was blown up by a mine at sea, a man named Martin being thrown into the water, which was covered with poisonous fumes. Thomas Dunn, Skipper, R.N.R., jumped in from another trawler and swam with him 300 yards, but when got on board life was extinct.

Elliot, Arthur, stoker on one of H.M. ships Case 43541

At 11.20 a.m. on the 3rd April, 1917, a ship was sunk at sea by an enemy mine, and one of the crew was seen struggling in the water. Arthur Elliot, stoker on one of H.M. ships, jumped in and caught him, but when got into a boat he did not recover.

At 7 p.m. on the 26th February, 1917, a man fell into the harbour at Larne in a dangerous position between a vessel and the quay, the depth being 22 feet and the night dark. Charles Ellis, Chief Skipper, R.N.R., and Thomas Bidgood, Torpedo Gunner, R.N., went in and with the help of a rope got him out.

At 1.30 a.m. on the 16th October, 1917, Mrs B.A. Poecock fell into a dangerous gully on Cader Idris. John F. Evans, P.S., and Griffith Pugh went to her help, and with much difficulty succeeded in saving her.

At 1 p.m. on the 5th August, 1917, a French boy accidentally fell into the river at Hallines, France, the water being deep, with a strong undercurrent. Private John Fay, R.A.M.C., went in and effected his rescue.

At 9 a.m. on the 18th July, 1916, three boys who had been on board fishing boats which were wrecked during a vioilent storm at Ceylon were seen clinging to crafts at various distances from shore, the sea being very rough. P.E Fernado, R.N. Fernando, and W.A.J. Fernando all swam out and each succeeded in saving a boy.

At 10 a.m. on the 4th October, 1916, a man while assisting with a raft in the river at Poona, India, became exhausted and sank 80 yards out in a depth of 15 to 20 feet. Lieutenant A.A.E. Filose, 39th Central India Horse, swam out fully clothed and dived, but failed to find him.

At 10.40 a.m. on the 17th June, 1917, an apprentice on the s.s. Manchester Exchange while bathing in the river at Philadelphia got into difficulty. George Fisher, 3rd Officer of the ship, at once jumped in and dived but was unable to find him.

At 5 p.m. on the 20th July, 1917, a youth named O'Driscoll while bathing at Skibbereen got into difficulty in 10 feet of water. Ernest John Foster went in and was successful in saving him.

At 3.30 p.m. on the 22nd July, 1917, two boys while bathing in the mill dam at Willington got into difficulty in a depth of 15 feet. Robert W. Garbutt went in fully clothed and succeeded in saving both.

At 3.30 p.m. on the 30th March, 1917, a seaplane with two officers, fell into the Tay about a quarter of a mile from shore, the depth being 6 fathoms and the weather very cold. Flight-Sub-Lieutenant T.A. Gladstone, R.N.A.S., dived for his companion and then supported him till a launch reached them.

At 8.30 p.m. on the 8th June, 1917, a mental patient threw himself overboard from a vessel into the River Tigris, there being a strong current and the night dark. Private W. Goldsmith, Machine Gun Corps, and Private F. Holliday, R.A.M.C., went in, and between them succeeded in saving him.

At 3.50 p.m. on the 26th July, 1917, two men accidentally fell overboard from a tug close to the Nore Lightship. A. Graham, Signalman, and H. Gisby went after them, Gisby having a line with him, and between them they supported the men till they were picked up.

At 1 p.m. on the 10th February, 1917, a man of the Arab Rifles fell from a canoe into a flooded river in East Africa, the depth being 20 feet. Sergt. Seyd Greyt, Arab Rifles, and Buana Bin Mallin, a porter, went in and succeeded in bringing him out.

At 1.30 on the 11th November, 1916, a lunatic threw himself from the bridge at Omagh, the depth being 10 feet and the river in flood. Sergeant James Gunn, Royal Irish Constabulary, went in and after a desperate struggle got him out 150 yards lower down.

At 4.15 a.m. on the 15th April, 1917, a man accidentally fell into the dock at Calais, the depth being 40 feet and very cold. Lieutenant A.W. Habershon, A.S.C., went in and held him till a rope was got and they were pulled out.

At mid-day on the 9th December, 1916, a boat capsized in the Firth of Forth, about half a mile from shore, in a depth of 5 fathoms, one man being entangled in the ropes. David Hamil, Leading Seaman, R.N.R., dived and liberated him and got him to the boat, after which they were picked up.

At 11.25 a.m. on the 3rd March, 1917, two men of the R.N.A.S. were accidentally knocked into the Humber at Killingholme, there being a strong tide and the water deep. Flight Lieutenant F.G.D. Hards swam out 70 yards but failed to reach them in time, and they were drowned.

At 4 p.m. on the 28th October, 1916, a seman was knocked overboard from his ship at sea by the recoil of a gun, there being a moderate gale and the sea very rough. Lieutenant H.J. Hartnoll, R.N., at once plunged in and succeeded in supporting him till they were picked up.

At 9 p.m. on the 20th February, 1917, a man fell from the quay into the harbour at St. Valery-Sur-Somme, France the depth being 10 feet and the night dark. W. Hedgecock, A.B., jumped in and swam with him to an iron ladder in the wall, when he was got out.

At 10.40 a.m. on the 21st July, 1917, a naval airship fell into the Humber at Brough about 30 yards from the side. Arthur L. Higham, aged 15, swam out and succeeded in saving one man.

At 3.20 p.m. on the 12th June, 1917, a soldier threw himself from a ship into the Mersey at Liverpool, there being a strong tide and the depth 50 feet. Percy E. Hill, Customs Officer, jumped in from the launch and supported him till they were picked up.

At 7.30 p.m. on the 17th April, 1917, the s.s. Donegal was torpedoed at sea, and a wounded soldier was seen in the water, it being nearly dark at the time. Lieutenant H. Holehouse, R.N.R., jumped in and brought the man to his ship, but when got on board he did not recover.

At 2.45 p.m. on the 16th May, 1917, a boat was run down in the Arctic Ocean, throwing a man into the water, which was very cold. Engineer-Sub-Lieutenant J.B. Holroyde, R.N.R., jumped in and getting him into a lifebuoy took him back to his ship.

At 5.30 p.m. on the 12th November, 1917, a fall of roof took place at the Derby Grange Colliery, Midgley, near Wakefield, burying three men, there being constant danger of a further fall. Denis Waring, Norman Lightowler, Robert Hutchinson, Herbert Lightowler, Joe Hooper, Harold Horsley, and Wifred Smith formed a rescue party, and at great risk got out two men alive and recovered the body of a third man who was dead.

On the 27th November, 1916, the s.s. City of Birmingham was sunk by a German Submarine in the Mediterranean. N. Hugh-Jones, R.V. Fox, and N.H. Bucknall, Cadets, acted with great gallantry and succeeded in saving three lives.

At 5 p.m. on the 13th April, 1917, two men got into difficulty while bathing in the Euphrates, the depth being 15 feet with a three knot current. Corporal Joseph Irwin, Royal Engineers, went in and succeeded in saving both.

At 9.30 p.m. on the 22nd October, 1914, a man in trying to swim across the Orange River at Uppington became exhausted 25 yards out in a depth of 20 feet, the current being strong. Trooper Woolf Joel, Natal Light Horse, went in and succeeded in saving him.

At 5 p.m. on the 22nd August, 1917, a soldier while bathing in the sea at Alexandria was carried out 400 yards by the strong current. Lance Corporal H.E. Johnson, Military Police, and Hassan Aly Makawi swam out and succeeded in bringing him to shore.

At 12.30 a.m. on the 11th December, 1916, a man fell overboard from his ship at sea and was in danger of crushing by another vessel which was alongside. Gunner James Johnson, R.M.A., went in but failed to find him and he was drowned.

At 10.25 p.m. on the 17th November, 1917, two men accidentally fell into the dock at Milford Haven. Edgar C. Jones, Deck Hand on an armed yacht, jumped in and caught them, and they were got out with a rope ladder.

At 9 p.m. on the 5th October, 1917, a man fell into the East Dock, Burntisland, the depth being 24 feet, the night dark and very cold. J. W. Jordan, Leading Stoker, R.N., went in and supported him for 15 minutes, when a boat reached them.

At 12.20 p.m. on the 8th July, 1917, a vessel was blown up by a mine at sea, all the crew being thrown into the water. Patrick Keefe, A.B., R.F.R., swam to the help of a man who was in difficulty and kept him afloat until a boat picked them up.

At 7.30 p.m. on the 15th June, 1917, Evelyn Webster, aged 12, while bathing in a lake at Battle got into difficulty in deep water. Charlotte L. Kensington jumped in from a boat and succeeded in rescuing her.

At 8.30 a.m. on the 27th August, 1917, a man was accidentally knocked overboard from his ship at sea, there being a considerable swell on. John H. Kerruish, R.N.R., jumped in but being clutched had to release his hold and the man was drowned.

Kitson, Harry, Butcher on a Hospital Ship Case 43160

At 3 p.m. on the 18th September, 1916, a man of the R.A.M.C. threw himself overboad from a Hospital Ship in the harbour at Kilindini. Harry Kitson, butcher on the ship jumped after him and kept him afloat until a boat reached him.

At 11.30 a.m. on the 18th August, 1916, a man accidentally fell overboard from his ship in the South Atlantic, there being a moderate sea and sharks numerous. Private Arthur V. Knights, R.M.L.I., was lowered into the sea, but failed to reach him before he sank.

At 10 a.m. on the 18th July, 1916, a soldier while bathing in the sea at Sidi Bishr, Alexandria, was carried out 60 yards into 20 feet of water, the sea being very rough. Acting Corporal Ernest H. Lamb, R.A.M.C., swam out and succeeded in bringing him to shore.

At 6 p.m. on the 15th October, 1916, a seaman accidentally fell into the Shat-el-Arab, the depth being 6 fathoms, with a strong current. Frederick C. Lander, A.B., jumped in and dived repeatedly, but failed to find him.

Langtry, Wilfred, Lieutenant, Canadian Infantry Case 43441

At 8 p.m. on the 17th June, 1917, two officers were bathing in the sea in France and got into danger in deep water 100 yards from shore. Lieutenant Wilfred Langtry, Canadian Infantry, went to their help and succeeded in bringing them out one at a time.

At 2.30 p.m. on the 1st July, 1917, a boy fell overboard from the Clyde training ship Empress in the Gareloch. John Lawson, aged 14, at once went in and supported him until a boat reached them.

Moseley succeeded in getting out and then finding his companion was entangled with the horses went in and was able to liberate and bring him out.

At 4.30 p.m. on the 28th November, 1914, a man rode his horse into a stretch of water near Reitz, South Africa, and got into a deep hole 20 yards from the side. Lieutenant John H. Thomas, S.A.M.R., went in and was successful in saving him.

At 7.30 p.m. on the 27th June, 1917, a little boy accidentally fell from the rocks into the sea at Buckie, the depth being about 9 feet. James Thomson, aged 12, went in and succeeded in bringing him out.

At 4 a.m. on the 22nd December, 1916, one of H.M. ships was sunk at sea, the weather being bitterly cold and the sea rough. Sub-Lieutenant F.C.N.G. Thursby, R.N., who was in the water, got hold of a man who was in difficulty and swam with him to another ship which was picking up survivors, and he was got on board.

At 8 a.m. on the 9th March, 1917, a boat with five men on board was capsized in Widewell Bay, Orkney, the depth being 10 fathoms and the weather very cold. Lieutenant A. Watchlin, R.N.R., got three of the men on the upturned boat and supported the fourth, who was unconscious, till they were picked up.

At 8.30 a.m. on the 16th February, 1917, a trawler was blown up by mine at sea and one of the crew was seen in the water in an unconscious state. Alexander Watson, Leading Seaman, R.N.R., jumped in from another trawler and supported him until they were picked up.

At 9 a.m. on the 17th June, 1917, a lad while bathing in a rough sea at Bombay got into difficulty and was carried out about 100 yards. Pestonji M. Batha went in, but was himself drowned. Ernest V. Weston then went in and got the boy out, but he did not recover.

At 11.50 a.m. on the 6th May, 1917, a man was overcome by foul gas in a sewer at Woolwich. Geo. W. Wetherly, Fireman, London Fire Brigade, went down twice but on each occasion had to be hauled up and was unable to effect the rescue.

On the morning of the 14th January, 1917, Captain B. Gibson, R.A.M.C., while bathing at Hod Masaid, Egypt, was carried out 100 yards by the strong under-tow, the sea being very rough. Signal Corpl. R.A. Wheaton, Ninth Australian Light Horse, swam out and brought him in, but he did not recover.

At 2 a.m. on the 22nd November, 1916, a soldier fell overboard from a transport at Freetown, Sierra Leone, there being a strong tide and a danger from sharks. Private N.R. Wight, Australian Imperial Force, jumped in and caught him but could not hold him till further help came.

On the night of the 11th December, 1916, a mounted soldier when crossing a narrow bridge on a submerged roadway near Salonika fell over into deep water, it being pitch dark at the time. Second Lieutenant F.J. Winter, R.F.A., in full uniform at once jumped in and succeeded in bringing him out.

On the 15th June, 1916, a man while bathing in the River Somme in France got into difficulty in the strong stream. Corporal R. Woods, Royal Scots, went in and with difficulty succeeded in saving him.

At 8.15 a.m. on the 21st December, 1916, a trawler was blown up by a mine at sea and Lieutenant W.A. Carmichael, R.N.R., was seen in a helpless state in the water. Robert Wright, Second Hand on the trawler, jumped in from a boat and succeeded in getting him on board, but he did not recover.

At 9.30 a.m. on the 3rd August, 1917, a man while bathing in the sea at Southsea was seized with cramp about 30 yards from shore. Henry V. Young swam out and succeeded in bringing him to land.

At 1.30 p.m. on the 18th November, 1916, an insane officer jumped overboard from a hospital ship into the River Tigris, the depth being 15 feet and the current strong. Captain J.L.D. Yule, R.A.M.C., at once went after him and kept him afloat until a boat reached them.
