The best in folk music and song every Thursday evening

ABOUT US

POLICY

The events that take place every Thursday in the well-appointed upstairs room at the Royal Oak in Station Street, Lewes, East Sussex are intended to encourage the performance of traditional music and song. We operate throughout the year apart from August.
This is not a club as such; there is no membership, rather a number of like minds who come together to celebrate and enjoy a range of musical traditions in a convivial, socially conducive atmosphere. We believe that we try to make all newcomers feel welcome.
Guest artists are booked to appear virtually every week; we do have a very few 'Open Nights' during the year. Within our limited financial resources, we try to present artists from a range of musical backgrounds and experiences who are talented and display a love of their chosen music or styles. When we have guest artists, there is a cover charge on the door that reflects the status and fees of the artists. However, we do try to run our non-guest nights on a "Free Admission" basis. All the money that we take is used to book the best variety of guest artists that we can afford. We are not subsidised in any way by commercial sponsorship, arts organisation or local council grant The organisers bear the running costs of the venture themselves in the belief that they get more out of it than they put in.

For visitors to the town, we are easily found. From the train station, turn right out of the main exit from the station and go up Station Street. The main crossroads in the town is where Station Street crosses the High Street where buses arrive. The large train station car park is free after 7.30pm.

FORMAT OF EVENING

The evenings run from 8.00pm prompt (no late starts!) until 11.00pm. As well as two extended sets of around 45 minutes each by the booked artists, each evening will normally start with an open session of dance tunes and include items from the resident performers and a selection of spots from any regular or visiting musician and singer who has come along. The comperes are always keen to include new talent in the evenings.
