It was good news to hear that Martin Gavin (or Scotch Martin) had returned to Glasgow where ten years ago he and other NS fans had thought up Goodfoot on the bus back from a Yorkshire nighter. He has now got together with Lenny Harkins and opened up the Caledonia Soul club. On the opening night he promised Mikey Collins of Friday Street whom I missed after returning home o collect my camera and Keith Money of east coast fame. I wondered if Glasgow was ready for a slightly more purist Northern night than its soul fans were used to. No worries once I got in the door at eleven there were at least 100 in and Lenny Harkins was taking a less than purist approach to the range of Northern he was playing. Service at the bar was quick and it was £2:30 for a pint of Carlsberg. Still space for my wife and I to nip one of the last tables. A few enthusiasts were on the floor including a young lad with a full-blown pair of Spencer bags. Less than half an hour later no tables, a queue at the bar and a crowded dance floor meant the club was full. Woodside is the plushest setting I’ve been in since a trip to Stirling social club with banquette seating, a smooth wooden dance floor and a glitter ball. My wife was not impressed by the lack of air conditioning and smoke filters. I think I must be going to too many Northern nights as I am beginning to recognise the records. I noted that Lenny Harkins finished a good set at midnight with Trick Bag and Love Guess Who by Martha Reeves. Keith Money may have played The Impressions You've been Cheating to sate Glasgow's enthusiasm for Curtis Mayfield but he quickly mixed in some modern stuff as well (much to my wife's delight). His ten-inch dub plate of Billy Valentine sounded superb. As Mikey Collins approached with a flyer for Afterglow at the Ad Lib to add to the pile on our table I had to ask if everyone here was promoting a night. I then got up and circulated the room handing out flyers for Goodfoot and my Edinburgh radio show Hipshakin’ Boogaloo. I bumped into Craig Jamieson of the Modern Lovers soul Club where Katrina Dixon had DJ'd last month. I then encountered the Dundee contingent starting with Ali who was trying to disguise himself as a Glaswegian by donning a Brazil top, which looks like a Celtic away strip at a distance. Martin Gavin eventually made it to the stage at 1:00 am and kicked off with Charles Sheffield's Voodoo Womanwhich some gal had hassled him for on the way to the toilet. We had to head home in case my sons had murdered each other over the TV remote so left Martin with 200 plus happy NS fans. We will be back for the November gig: I hope they will. Frank Murphy |
