Played at the excellent venue of the Vale of Glamorgan Country Club, this evenly balanced match was keenly contested. Gwent took the lead when Varley trapped Trevelyan’s queen early on. Then there came a rush of dubious draw decisions, where East Glam were clearly better in most of them – decisions which could have made the match much closer. In the end Gwent’s top boards caused the damage scoring 3½/4. It must also be said that Gwent’s bottom boards, who were considerably outrated, performed very well, scoring 3/5. Most notable was Gary Thomas’ win against D.Jones. With a number of our top players out, Gwent can only look forward to the next county match.
