After the fiasco of the first round of the 4NCL, where, would you believe it, the sets and clocks didn't arrive, the Dragons got off to a winning start with a 5½-2½ win over Guildford. Although the score seems emphatic, several of our players survived some scary moments. Frank May went a piece down but dug deep to find compensation in a very strong attack. Jon Gilbert can thank his opponent for not knowing how to win R+rp v R, and I (M.A.) threw away a won position to an outrageous cheapo, losing the exchange but hanging on to a k+p ending. Iolo Jones and Peter Varley had safe draws on top boards, Andy Borg survived a massive king onslaught, you know the type - castles Q, plays g4, h4-5, doubles rooks on the h-file, sacs pawns to open the king up - nightmare!, but managed accurate defence and counter play to win the game after 70 odd moves. Richard was always, better/winning, against his unrated opponent on board 7. We must learn not to underestimate our opponents if they have a low grade. They probably got that grade by playing league chess with fast time controls. In the 4NCL with a 7 hour playing session low rated players can play to a much higher standard.

We all felt very bad for Amanda John, with round 1 postponed until the last weekend, and Guildford defaulting board 8 she, and her father, travelled all that way for no games. I hope this didn't put her off playing in the 4NCL.

An absolutely stunning victory for the team. Outgraded on every board, we looked on this as a training match in preparation for the clash with Nidum the next day. After Pete's superb win on board 1, against the highly rated Lewis, there was a succession of draws. Lynda then took an excellent scalp on her debut, with a win over the experienced Heather Lang. This was a remarkable result considering the fact that Lynda had only played 1 competitive game in the last 5 years. With the score at 4-3 I dug in against Reuben for 6 hours. After claiming the draw by repetition incorrectly (you shouldn't play the move which draws, but just write it down!!), Reuben finally gave in. A great victory, but we had to keep our heads clear for the big match on Sunday.

An extremely closely fought match. Both teams were up for this one. There was great tension throughout the match. Nidum, in contrast to our great win in round 2, lost 7-1 to Coulsden and Purley. We were optimistic for the win. I was first to finish after Jones blundered the exchange. Lynda had a safe draw with Julie. John Fletcher was always in control in his game, and forced a perpetual check. All of a sudden, however, the match started to slip away from us. Fred lost on time followed by Andy. This left Jon Gilbert's and Peter's match. With the score at 2½-3½, we needed 1½/2 to draw and 2/2 to win. Peter was always winning his game and brought the first point - 3½-3½. Jon managed to win an exchange after a prolonged attack, but Musson had some counter play. The tension was unbelievable. As time slipped away, both players decided to cease hostilities - good decision as the game, and the match, could have gone either way - 1 point is better than none.

Rounds 5 & 6 Birmingham, January 1998

Nigel Saunders was captain for this weekend. Here's his report……

The team selected, whilst not the strongest possible, was very experienced and solid all the way down. We had high hopes of capitalising on our 2nd place against two of the more beatable teams in the division. Unfortunately, due to a fixture clash, Annie Powell, who was scheduled to play, withdrew at short notice, leaving us with a major problem. In the event, our reserve lady, Lynda Roberts, went down with flu at less than 24 hours notice, leaving us no choice but to field the only available lady player. Heather Thomsett gallantly stepped in at a few hours notice although, with a grade of 1095, she would be out graded by between 400 and 1000 points. This meant that we were effectively conceding a point start to both our opponents. Given the nature of the league, where points are hard to come by, this left us very little chance and eventually proved to be the case.

The match against Witney was hard fought. Peter Varley outplayed his opponent, misjudged a sacrifice and bailed out for a draw in a still won position. I blundered a piece in a misjudged combination and lost swiftly. All the other games were hard fought with missed chances for both sides. The eventual result was a 5-3 loss.

Sundays match was even closer, resulting in a 4½-3½ defeat for us which, given the point we were conceding, was a good result. Nidum Knights lost to the same team in round 5 6½-1½. Whilst Gwent Dragons can hold their heads up, the overall result was a very bad day for Wales, as our failure to score means that there will be no Welsh team in division 1 next year as South Wales Dragons are now certainly relegated - a tragedy for both the Olympiad squad and our stronger juniors.

This result put us back in contention for promotion. Although we were against the bottom team, we didn't underestimate our opponents. Just as well as they fielded a stronger team, on paper. A very close and exiting match played in very good spirits. O'Shaunessy was due to play on board 5, but didn't turn up. Under the new ruling, King's Head were allowed to play a reserve player who played a very solid game against Jonathon and was clearly giving nothing away. Annie Powell made a great debut for us and certainly showed that she has a promising future in chess. After arriving late and a being a little nervous, she had a bad position out of the opening but showed great fighting spirit by forcing herself back into the game. Andrew had a great first game for us - crushing his opponent in a very aggressive style.

With the match tied at 3½ each, the last game being played was board 1. Iolo had a tough game against a very strong player. In a very tense ending, Iolo outplayed his opponent magnificently - he was finding moves that the 'crowd' hadn't even seen. A great game and a thoroughly deserved (and welcomed) win.

An even tougher match than round 7. With a 2245 on board 5! they outgraded us on every board by some way. In the end, we were very unlucky not to take a point off them, losing by the narrowest of margins, especially after the top 4 boards had won 3-1! Iolo had a great draw with the highly rated Rossiter. Pete had a great win with the black pieces. Andy Borg's phenomenal preparation was the key in his crush over Yeo. He has dozens of Yeo's games on his database and said that he was confident he knew what Yeo's first 15 moves would be. It's an example to us all. If we want to win at this level we must do this kind of work beforehand. Great work Andy! And congratulations on your 100% this weekend.
