War of the League of Augsburg Gallery |

Inspired by Barry Hilton’s enthusiasm for this period of history (1685-1700ish) and the great photographs of the figures on his website www.leagueofaugsburg.com and in Wargames Illustrated magazine, I have started to buy and paint some figures (if in a fairly ad hoc way.) I will post pictures here as and when I make any sort of progress. |

I have chosen to paint some Dutch regiments first based on their utility both in Continental actions and as opposition to Jacobites in Britain & Ireland. I am also following the suggestions on the League of Augsburg site that with a change of command stand (or just the colours the carry) a unit can quite easily take on the guise of a number of historical regiments without taking too much in the way of liberties with historical detail. The key to this is in not worrying too much about the specific hat lace and small-clothes that a regiment is supposed to have worn, but allowing for colonels’ whims and campaign wear to produce a more motley look that allows easy change of identity and is more fun to paint as well. Next up is a dinky, six figure cavalry squadron. It will have white coats and red facings and be nominally the Dutch Regiment Athlone, although it was a very common uniform combination. I have chosen this particular regiment partly because their unit colours are not particularly distinctively Dutch and therefore I can field these figures in a variety of armies. |

I now have a published copy of Barry Hilton’s “Beneath the Lily Banners” and I will put up accounts of games as I try these rules. |

For my second cavalry squadron I have had a go at converting some English Civil War cavalry in lobster pot helmets into later armoured horse. All I decided was needed for the cavalry to be modified was their coats to be lengthened and cuffs enlarged; just about within my sculpting capabilities... |

I was forced to buy some painted Reiver figures on eBay recently which I have rebased and reflagged to provide some instant opposition for the Dutch. |
