Most people burn wood to heat their houses, but the rich prefer charcoal because it is cleaner (especially for chafing dishes, which keep food hot). It is used in smelting because it reaches a higher temperature than a wood fire. Charcoal is used in cities where there is a shortage of firewood, because it is lighter to transport. Charcoal is also used in making gunpowder. Charcoal burners go from one place to another making charcoal from whatever wood they can find. Because of the time it takes to make charcoal the burners may have serveral heaps going at a time.
