Smelters

Here you will find the smelters producing wrought iron. Wrought iron is produced by first roasting iron ore in the furnace using a wood fire. This dries out the iron ore and causes it to split into small pieces, which are easier to smelt. These small pieces will then be smelted in a charcoal fire, using bellows to raise the temperature until the ore is softened and form bloom. This is a molten lump of iron that has bits of rock etc still mixed with it. The bloom will be taken from the furnace will still hot and compacted with a wooden hammer. It is then reheated and beaten with an iron hammer to drive out the slag. The process takes between 8 and 12 hours.
