The sutlers earn their living by cooking for others, in this case the soldiers. They bake bread and pies in the bread oven at the farm. Meat is also roasted or boiled (stewed). Vegetables are used for salads, raw or cooked. Imported spices and dried fruit are used in addition to local produce such as cheese and cream.
