CHILD'S PLAY (MGM, 1988)
Director:Tom Holland Screenplay:Tom Holland & Don Mancini, John Lafia Producer: David Kirschner It's way too much like the old Twilight Zone episode "Talking Tina," but Child's Play caught on, thanks largely to a good TV ad campaign showing how much kids were scared by it and liked to yell ("Chucky! Chucky!"). Brad Dourif as murderer Charles Lee Ray doesn't last very long, but his soul and voice live on in a popular (and ugly) doll. All the kids want Good Guy dolls, and when Alex Vincent as six-year-old Andy gets the possessed one, the trouble stars. This doll talks, walks, kills, and makes wisecracks. Although sometimes a mechanical device, Chucky is mostly played by Ed Gale. The ending, with Catherine Hicks as the mom battling the seemingly indestructible evil-killer doll, is a lot like the doll segment of Trilogy of Terror. With Chris Sarandon as a Chicago cop and Dinah Manoff. Holland also directed Fright Nigkt. Chucky merchandise was available for real kids to own, which seems even more demented than Freddy Krueger dolls. The producer is the head of Hanna Barbera cartoons ( ! ).
