Experience

Master planning of projects has included the landscape planning for a new 100,000-population community in the Middle East. This included setting objectives and defining parameters to be considered for all aspects of landscape planning of a new Saudi community including housing areas, shopping areas, community facilities, transport and recreation. All aspects of the planning had to take into account the religious and cultural considerations of a Saudi community. Other schemes in the UK have included business park developments; undertaking comprehensive visual analyses together with the preparation of robust landscape framework proposals at the planning application stage.

Commercial and Retail Developments

The Practice is currently retained by Slough Estates plc to provide full landscape architectural services for commercial property developments in Slough and elsewhere in the south of England. The Practice has completed over 20 developments or commissions for Slough Estates up to a contract value of £85,000. The practice also receives commissions from other developers, architects and planning consultants for work mostly in and around the south-east of England.

All design work is carried out with the aid of specialist landscape design software (Artisan), which is driven by AutoCAD, facilitating easy data handling and transfer.

Sport and Leisure

Anthony Stiff has wide experience in this area of expertise including the design of parks, the design of sports pitches and athletics facilities, and the design of numerous play areas. Recent work has included the design of a nature park in Oxford City, a Millenium Green in Oxfordshire and a feasibility study for an 18-hole golf course in Buckinghamshire.

Housing

Experience of housing projects includes the landscape design and setting of new and refurbished housing sites.

Design and planning drawings prepared for estate of starter homes in Oxfordshire.

Replacement allotments required as a condition of new housing development on previous allotment site.

Anthony Stiff has also been responsible for schemes involving extensive community consultation and involvement, planning appeals, appearing as expert witness at public inquiry and landscape assessment of potential housing sites. Recent work has included the assessment of a large site for potential housing in the South-East for English Partnerships.

Other residential experience has included the grounds for sheltered and very sheltered accommodation.

Water Authority/Environment Agency

Experience ranges from the design and implementation of channel improvement schemes and flood alleviation schemes, to the landscape assessment of entire rivers and major infrastructure facilities.

Recent work has been undertaken on behalf of the Babtie Group to carry out landscape assessments for the Rivers Brent and Crane for the Environment Agency. Other work, also for Babtie, has included the landscape assessment of a proposed extension to a sewage treatment plant on the coastline at Aberdeen for the North of Scotland Water Authority.

Minerals Extraction

Recent work has included the examination of the landscape, ecological and dredging impacts of alternative options of bulk import and storage of materials for Blue Circle for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, associated with the operational cement works on the Kent Coast.

Other work has included an assessment of the feasibility of sand and gravel extraction from a former sewage treatment works to be de-commissioned, for the London Borough of Enfield. The work included landscape and ecological considerations, and the assessment of development/after-use potential.

Other experience has included the preparation of planning applications for mineral extraction, the preparation of restoration proposals for worked out quarry sites, and the landscape assessment of potential areas of extraction, including the preparation of proofs of evidence for public inquiry.

Reclamation

Anthony Stiff has extensive experience of undertaking reclamation projects including former coal workings, derelict and degraded land sites. Work has included the supervision of major earth moving and reclamation contracts to restore large sites to beneficial use for agriculture or amenity. Specialist areas of expertise include tree and shrub establishment on colliery spoil, and the establishment of turf, including the translocation of metallophyte turf with special botanical interest.
