Dyslexia
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a Specific Learning Difficulty (Sp.L.D.) which affects
a significant proportion of the population - possibly as many as one in
ten. It manifests as a difficulty with reading, spelling and writing,
and in many cases, numeracy also. It may show as a problem with
personal organisation or
coordination. It is attributed to
poor short-term memory and it is now generally accepted that the
dyslexic brain is physiologically different to the 'normal' brain. The
dyslexic will have strengths however, and many notable figures in history,
Einstein, da Vinci, Edison and so on are now known to have been dyslexic.
Dyslexia, by its very nature, cannot be 'cured', but informed, careful
and sympathetic teaching can do much to help.
