Roms and Bits
The idea for the cartoon grew out of an exercise to develop techniques
for producing character figures in resin using Silicone rubber moulds.
Mould making requires special skills and although I managed to produce
several moulds from sculptures I had designed the results were never
entirely satisfactory ( due in part to the lack of a de-gassing machine)
and so I created the more manageable Roms and Bits characters in wax
to help improve the process.
This first picture depicts part of a series of street
buskers (6 characters
so far, if you include the dog)
The
original figures were constructed from a
two-part epoxy putty called 'Milliput', which, goes rock hard when heated
( a few minutes in an oven at very low heat)) and then each
figure was cast
individually in its own mould and then set on the base ( The dog
and the hat are still in their 'Milliput' form). Milliput is very versatile - it
can be manipulated like putty and smoothed down using sponges/brushes
with water. Once 'set' it can be drilled and rubbed down with
glasspaper/Wet n Dry. It's a favourite of Model-makers and can usually
be found in your local Model Shop. If not, you can obtain it by mail
order from Alec
Tiranti Ltd who also carry a full range of tools and
materials for the Sculptor.
Buskers (Detail)
Because Milliput is so robust it is an excellent material
to work with -
However the following two figures, which complete the 'Buskers' set,
have been made mainly from modelling wax with only the hands and
instruments completed in Milliput.
Other sets of figures include a 'String Quartet' and
'barroom singers'
(slightly eccentric of course). Unfortunately, resin is a difficult medium
to manage in a home studio environment, so if anyone out there knows
of a Manufacturer/Distributor who might be interested in some type of
licensing/production arrangement then I would be happy to hear from
them.
Meantime if any budding sculptors want to exchange ideas etc
then please
don't hesitate to e-mail me
