Studies in Expression

Coal Miners

The North East of England was once a great coal mining area and although much of the Industry
has now disappeared people still look back on those hard times with a degree of fondness.
While researching the figure I made for M.M. Group my travels took me to the Photographic
Archives of  Beamish Open Air Museum in County Durham. The Archive is fully computerised
and as I "flicked" through the screens I couldn't help but notice the humour and
sense of comradeship displayed by the men who had to work
in such adverse conditions below ground.

----So while I was in the "Sculpting"  mood I thought I would have a go at trying
to capture a 'smidgen' of that spirit in the the two following sculptures, which
are shown here in their raw wax form. Wax is very easy to manipulate
and as these two pieces sit on the shelf  I will no doubt  make adjustments as I pass by.
As any artist will tell you, it only takes the slightest of change to alter a characters expression.
