(ABOVE RIGHT) Notice the lovely sense of depth in the hand-drawn background here as
the first stage boss hoves into view. Looks like its already had its tailplane shot off..

(ABOVE) Apart from conveying the wonderful sense of detail, static piccys
like this don't really do Battle Garegga justice.. you have to see the
astounding amount of onscreen mayhem, pyrotechnics and sprites
being flung around in action to truly appreciate it. Anyway here are
two later bosses in the game going down in flames.. lovely..

(ABOVE) This huge green battleship (left) is one of my favourite bosses
(Right) Flying over a fleet of floating warships.

(ABOVE) The latter stages of the game feature multiple boss fights galore, this stealth
fighter (left) being one. (Right) The final boss is about 3 screens high and 4 wide, yet
the graphical detailstill does not let up. And neither does the frenetic onscreen action..

(ABOVE) One of my favourite features of Battle Garegga are these 'outrigger'
powerups you can collect to increase your firepower. With a dab of a button
they can be positioned in a variety of configurations, including firing backwards,
rotating around your ship shooting outwards, or even following about your
plane 'Gradius'-style! Brilliant stuff!

Here's some rendered art from the 1999 sequel Battle Bakraid - I coudn't find
any screenshots I'm afraid. Apparently Bakraid features a mean smart-bomb which
engulfs enemy bullets.. sounds a bit like the bombs in Darius Gaiden to me..
Anyway, boy would I love to get the chance to play this game!
Unfortunately as far as I know it was only officially
released in Japanese Arcades - Grrrrr!!!!
