RUNWAY FOOTIE TIPS

Here are a few basic pointers to Runway Footie success, garnered from having played in a few matches myself and talking to other players.

Strikers(Attackers): Remember that goals not kills are the winning factor in Runway Footie. Goals are everything. With two teams of equal abilities pitched against each other scoring is no pushover, especially if the oppositions defence is a good one. To dominate the scorechart the 2 strikers need to work together, backed up with the defenders through the midfield, in order to puncture the enemy defence and outwit the goalie.

Strikers should try and approach the oppositions' goal together. Try to split the enemy defence by arriving slightly staggerred so that while their attention is drawn towards the first attacker the other can slip through towards goal. Using the width of the playing arena in the approach to goal is a good idea, wing play ie. one attacker taking the left wing, the other the right and flying towards goal at the same time, can be also be of great help.

Another idea is to use slightly staggered altitudes. For instance if one attacker can go high (bearing in mind that the max is 700m) and lure the defenders into climbing and getting into a dogfight near the goal mouth, they may be caught off-guard by a second low flying attacker slipping through beneath them. However climbing takes time and reduces speed, and most goals in the recent matches have come from strikers staying low and fast, and working together to cause gaps in the oppositions defence.

If you feel the need to engage in combat with any defenders do so, but generally the best idea if you want to score goals is to avoid getting into a fight wherever possible. An undamaged plane has a far greater chance of making it across the length of the runway to score, especially if the goalie mangages to get behind you and starts filling you with lead. Remember that as long as your plane is in one piece as it crosses the finish line of the runway it will count as a goal, even if you have been shot down before you get there. Pulling up slightly towards the end of the runway if you think you are near death may help you get that last few feet needed to make it.

If you are on the goal run (over the enemy runway) with the goalie or a defender hard on your tail consider applying brakes and gear in the hope they will overshoot leaving you free to fly on and score.

If you do get a goal, the best thing is not to try and go come round again for a second attempt as their defence and goalie will be alerted to your presence and your chances are slim. Check your map to see where your other striker is, if he is approaching the enemy goal consider sacrificing yourself as bait in order to lure the defence away from him. Otherwise crash and get back to your own runway asap, then get back in there and do it all again!

Defenders: The defenders in runway footie probably have the hardest job, as they need to split their time between trying to keep enemy attackers away from their base and backing up the attacking players in the midfield. While hanging back at their own goal end will obviously help stop enemy attackers from scoring, it leaves their own strikers open to attack. Likewise leaving base and venturing too far upfield can be dangerous. Although defenders can go anywhere they like in the arena they are the players that need to be the most self-disciplined during the game.

Like the two strikers, try to work together with your other defender, obviously don't both go for the same enemy if another is approaching, split up and take one each. Make sure that taking out enemy strikers is your top priority, assigning enemy defenders as secondary targets.

Also try and escort your own attackers out into the midfield ( going only as far as an imaginary 'half-way line' between the two runways ), watching all the time for enemy strikers approaching. Only at the last minute should you leave your own attackers if you see an enemy attacker is going to get past you. As long as you manage to get a few shots in before he approaches your goal the goalie should be able to take over and finish him off before he scores, leaving you the option of getting back to the midfield if you need to do so.

As a last ditch tactic, consider crashing and thus getting back to your own runway in order to have a chance of downing an enemy striker who is on goal as you take off.

Goalies: Obviously a key position, goalies may find themselves playing a bit of a waiting game for much of the match, but the action becomes fast and furious should any enemy attackers get through towards your goal! Constantly check your map to see where the enemy team is and what direction they are heading, any fast moving targets coming towards your runway will be strikers so get ready. Move to the front of your runway (the goal mouth end) and try to anticipate their speed and heading. so you can intercept, turn and get behind them. Then follow them in as they head goalwards. Remember you can only start shooting when you get back over your runway so maneouvre into firing position then as soon as you are clear to fire let them have it! As soon as they are downed turn and get back towards the goalmouth in anticipation for the next attack.

Should two attackers get through onto your goal you need to think fast. In all likelihood one will get through and score but going for the first attacker might be a good idea, with a bit of luck one of your defenders will be able to get back and take out the other behind.

If you are in a bad position ie. head to head with an incoming enemy striker consider trying to ram him to prevent him scoring!
