Gloucester County Cricket Club
commissioned BGP McConaghy Architects to design a new stand to replace
the former Jessop Tavern. The new stand provides around 800 permanent
seats for spectators and includes new bars, social areas and the Princess
Diana suite, which will allow the Club to properly display the important
collection of memorabilia in an educational facility utilising the very
latest interactive hands-on equipment.
The structure, steel framed
with precast concrete terrace units and a light fabric tent roof, was
constructed between the end of 1998 and start of the 1999 season, ready
for the Cricket World Cup. It gives the ground a welcome air of cricketing
festivity, set, as it is, against the rather somber and institutional
backdrop of the former Muller Orphanage.
