Resources
Your PC and Devices communicate through the use of Drivers and Resouces.
You don't need to know exactly how they work, but you need to know that
as a general rule when a device uses a type of resource the value assigned
needs to be unique.
Types of resources and possible values
Type of Resource |
Possible Values |
IRQ (Interrupt Request) |
1 to 15 |
Base I/O Address |
0000 to FFFF |
Memory Address |
00000000 to FFFFFFFF |
DMA (Direct Memory Access) |
1 to 5 |
Because Devices work differently they will use one or more types of resource
to communicate with your P.C.
Resource Conflict
Problems with devices will occur when two or more devcies are trying
to use the same Resource Value of the same Resource Type.
Real Life Example.
On a PC the Mouse uses IRQ3 and the modem is also using IRQ3. This creates
a Resource Conflict. The PC appears to function correctly, including the
mouse untill the modem is used to connect to the internet. As a result
of the Resource conflict the mouse then stops responding since the modem
is now using IRQ3. The mouse starts to function again once the user has
disconnected from the Internet.
