Newcastle make a loss

newcastle United have had a 10% decline in Merchandise sales from £9.02 million to £8.1 million despite a 20% increase in turnover. A poor summer in terms of weather and bad results have been partly blamed for the fall in the number of shirts sold. Newcastle's Plc chairman Denis Cassidy said " For the first time in 30 years, St James' Park welcomed more than one million spectators last season."

Guivarc'h linked with Blackburn

World Cup winner Stephane Guivarc'h has now been linked with a move to Premiership strugglers Blackburn Rovers. Guivarc'h was expected to move to Glasgow Rangers last week but the deal fell through due to his personal demands. Rovers have only Kevin Davies as a recognised striker up front as Sutton and Gallacher are injured while Martin Dahlin in suspended. It is unlikely however that he will go as he may find himself back on the bench when the other players return.

17th October

Petrescu on his way to Newcastle?

Chelsea's out of favour 'wing back' Dan petrescu could be moving to Newcastle to link up with his old coach Ruud Gullit. Petrescu was told he was surplus to requirements at Chelsea by Gianluca Vialli and has only made a handfull of appearences. Petrescu would cost about £2 million, but Newcastle already have two right sided defender's in Warren Barton and Andy Griffin.

Shearer denies mutiny

Stories in most newspapers this morning have stated that after the England game against Luxembourge Alan Shearer led a dressing room mutiny against Glenn Hoddle. The reports said that when Hoddle asked why the players didn't perform Shearer stood up and said " Have you ever thought it might be you", however Glenn Hoddle has come forward and said that the entire story was " pure garbage". Shearer has also insisted that the story was nonsense, he said " There was a discussion in the dressing room after the game but I am not prepared to say what was said. Watson sai dhe was upset at leaving newcastle but had no doubts about signing for Villa " When I was told I could leave and Villa were interested then there was no problem joining the club at the top of the premier league."

11th October

Board refuses to comment on Juve link

Newcastle have refused to say anything about the story linking Alan Shearer with a move to Juventus. The move was reported in The Mirror newspaper on Friday that Shearer's agent was holding talks with the Italian champions, this is probably rubbish, Shearer's agent was also said to be seen going into Arsenal a few weeks ago when the rumours started about a possible move to Highbury.

New take-over talks?

Stories have emerged this morning about a possible take-over of Newcastle United. No body has been named as yet but it is likely to be a media group such as Time-Warner or Granada. Whoever does buy Newcastle it will cost around £150 million to buy out the majority shareholder Cameron Hall. Last month electronic giants Sony were also linked with Newcastle.

6th October

Gullit denies Rift with Board

Ruud Gullit has rubbished suggestions that he has not seen eye to eye with the Newcastle board and that there is a rift between them over the money available to buy players. Gullit said " Having read the reports of my comments after the Arsenal match, I am disturbed to see people assuming there is a rift between myself and the board. " That could not be further from the truth. We are all working in the same direction." " The board and I know we need changes to the playing staff. I want success here and I want it quickly," he added.

Shearer Future still at Newcastle

Alan Shearer has pledged his future to the club after numerous reports over the past few months linking him with a move away from Tyneside. More question marks were raised when Ruud Gullit took over as Newcastle boss nearly two months ago. Since then however Shearer has hit a purple patch scoring seven goals already this season and being awarded the player on the month award. Shearer said " I have already pledged my support - commitment and future to Newcastle United, despite misleading headlines in the papers, this remains the case." Shearer has also given his full support to Ruud Gullit Shearer said " I am sure the manager is capable of putting things right. Ruud has come out and said he does not want to sell me and I belive him. " I went to Newcastle to win things and although it has not gone as well as people had hoped I still belive we can do it. " How long it will take, I don't know."

30th September

Watto travels with team

Newcastle's Steve Watson who is at the centre of transfer speculation has travelled to Belgrade with the rest of the squad. One of the few players brought through the youth set-up 24 year old Watson has been linked with a number of clubs over the past few weeks including Spurs, Everton and Middlesborough. Everton seem the favourites to sign Watson but the are unhappy with Newcastle's valuation of £4.25 million. Watson has not yet commented on the current situation but it has been reported that he is unhappy that Newcastle are willing to part company with him. Ruud Gullit was also as unhelpful as ever " I won't speculate on players moving in or out of the club." Sunderland have also been linked with the player, but have refused to pay the asking price. Peter Reid defended himself by saying that he wasn't afraid to fork out large sums of money for players " We paid over £2 million for Lee Clark. " enough said!

Dyer move on the Cards

Speculation that Ruud Gullit is about to make a move for Ipswich's talented youngster Kieron Dyer is increasing. The 19 year old midfielder is very highly rated and is expected to be an England regular in the future. Officials from Ipswich were at Newcastle's reserve game this week perhaps to have a player exchanged in any deal. It is unclear how much Ipswichh will want for the player but my guess is around £6 million or so.

Newcastle's new manager Ruud Gullit has ruled out a return to Chelsea in a bid to bring in new players to the club. Gullit has been linked with Chelsea's Tore Andre Flo but has denied that he is making a move for the player. He said " I was never interested in buying Tore. He is at Chelsea, and I am not going to be involved in that. " I built that team and i don't want to be accused of demolishing them, so I will not go for players at Chelsea. "

Dalglish may Sue Newcastle

Dalglish maintains that he was sacked although the club said thet he offered to resign. Dalglish said " The quicker it is done, the better but if it takes two or three years, or I have to see them in court, then I will see them settling the bill at the end of it. I'm confident. "

Flo to join Mags

Over the weekend Newcastle have been linked with a £9 million bid for Chelsea's Norwegian International striker Tore Andre Flo. The 22 year old was signed by Gullit when he was still at Chelsea and is obviously a big fan of the player. Chelsea coach Gianluca Vialli has in teh past refused to listen to any offers for Flo but a £9 million offer may be tempting for the Chelsea shareholders.

Batty to make return

David batty will play his first game since the World cup with a reserve game at Rotherham on Tuesday. Batty has been on the sidelines with an ankle injury as well as suffering a 6 game ban. He said " Indiscipline has been a problem for me in the Premiership. I've had too many suspensions. " But whether I am playing in a World Cup game or in the reserves I am always thinking ' can I win the ball or not? '."

19th September

Shearer offered new Deal

After mounting speculation surrounding the future of Alan Shearer Newcastle are about to offer the England striker an extension to his current contract and keep him at Newcastle for life. Over the past few weeks Shearer has been linked to a number of clubs most recently Arsenal but Arsene Wenger has said that he is not interested in Shearer. If Shearer does decide to stay his basic wage could be boosted from £30,000 a week to around £40,000.

Guivarc'h moving on?

Stephane Guivarc'h looks resigned to not having a future at Newcastle after only two months following the arrival of Ruud Gullit on Tyneside. Guivarc'h has not demanded a transfer but is not happy with the way things are going at Newcastle, he has said that he would still love toplay for Newcastle with Shearer but Gullit has other ideas. Things were not looking good for Guivac'h the moment Gullit arrived as the Dutchman had slated Guivarc'h,s performance during the World Cup. The only club to show an interest so far is Celtic.

17th September

Ketsbaia Happy Shearer is Staying

Temuri Kestbaia has welcomed Alan Shearer's decision to stay at Newcastle. " It can only help a player when he scores goals and the goals he scored against Southampton will help build our confidence. It is important he stays for the club because he is one of teh best players in the World."

Shearer May Still Quit

Alan Shearer gave a statement regarding his future at Newcastle yesterday, but it still left fears amongst some people that he could still leave, Shearer did'nt even give the statement him self Rob lee and Ruud Gullit issued it. In the statement Shearer did not once say he had pledged his future to the club. Parts of the statement read "If I comment on speculation every time it is written I would be in the press all the time and I would rather concentrate on preparing for football. " However, because the fans have specifically asked, I can say that I have spoken with the chairman and the manager and they have told me that they see me as an important part of Newcaslte's future. Not very helpful was it it seems that this staement has only increased the speculation, teh only way fans will be assured that he will not leave is if Shearer comes out and says in person ' I am not leaving Newcastle'.

Batty Sweats on Inclusion

David Batty has been left sweating over whether he will be included in the starting eleven to face Partizan Belgrade in tonights Cup Winner's Cup first leg. Batty still won't be available to play in the Premiership untill the Nottingham Forest game a week on Saturday. Batty came through a reserve game yesterday, but he is more likely to be named as one of the seven subs.

14th September

Villa still after Shearer

Aston Villa are ready to step up there bid to sign Alan Shearer despite Newcastle's insistance that he is going nowhere. Aston Villa manager John Gregory will have talks with Shearer's advisor Tony Stephens to see what it would take to get Shearer to the unfashionable midland's club. Ruud Gullit said he was not for sale but it has not deterred the Villa manager who would be willing to pay over £15 million. It has been suggested that Shearer has not ruled out the move. personnaly I think this is all crap, Shearer had the chance to leave for Manchester in pre-season so why would he want to go to Villa, a club who quite frankly can't even hold onto there own star player's. I get the feeling however that there must be something up, Shearer has not looked too happy of late and I think a move to an Italian club may be on the cards.

Leeds chase Batty

Leeds have increased there interest in bringing David Batty back to Elland Road if Newcastle show that they are willing to sell the England midfielder. Batty who has just signed a five year contract at Newcastle has been linked with a move away from St James since the arrival of Gullit. Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale said " Batty is a player George Graham admires. If he wanted him we would do our best to get him."

The Serie A club were ready to pay £20 million for Shearer (see below) so he could link up with there record signing Ronaldo. However the club said that even a World record bid for Shearer would not tempt them to part company with him. Ruud Gullit said that he was not keen to lose the player either " I am looking to strengthen the squad not weaken it by selling Shearer."

Sony linked with Take over

Japanese electronic giants Sony have been linked with a possible take over of Newcastle United, reports suggest that the bid could be in the region of £220 million about a third of the price that BSKYB paid for Manchester United. It has been said that Sony have been attracted to the club by " the pulling power of Ruud Gullit and Alan Shearer " it has also been suggested that preliminary talks have taken place. Neither the club or Sony themselves have commented on the situation, Newcaslte are the fifth club to be linked with a corporate takeover.

Shearer in £20 million bid from Inter Milan

Once again Alan Shearer has been linked to a move to the continent. After last weeks bid from Parma which was around £13.5 million Inter have been said to have offered Newcastle £20 million for the England captain which would have him linking up with the Worlds greatest footballer Ronaldo. of course there has been no word from St James but it is likely that Shearer will leave Newcastle at some point. Also there were reports in some Sunday newspapers saying that Aston Villa were ready to offer £15 million for Shearer which shows that you can't believe everything you read.

12th September

Gullit Explains Guivarc'h Absence

Ruud Gullit has revealed that he has had clear-the-air talks with Stephane Guivarc'h. Guivarc'h was omitted from the side which beat Southampton 4-0 even though the Frenchman scored on his debut against Liverpool. Gullit said " I've spoken to him to explain the situation."

9th September

He has worked hard in the game for everything he's got."

7th September

Gillespie may return at Villa

Keith Gillespie could make a shock comeback for Newcastle this Wednesday against Aston Villa after coming through his first game in Turkey after being out for four months. The Irish winger said he had not had any adverse reaction to the ankle injury he received against Spurs last season.Gillespie was one of many Northern Ireland players who had coins and bottles thrown at them during the game against Turkey. Also things must be getting pretty desperate in Turkey, Gillespie had a watch and a tracksuit top stolen from the dressing room, all reasonably eye-catching for a thief but somebody stole his......underpants?

Ruud Rumours

A few things have been emerging from St James Park this week, nothing too official however but interesting none the less. First, apparently Ruud Gullit has told Alan Shearer whoever he want's to play up front with he will get, if the player is available, which leaves a big questionmark surrounding Guivarc'h and Andersson who Gullit does seem to like. Also I heard over the weekend that Gullit took the players out for a meal in Newcastle during the week, and at one point took five players to one side and gave them a dressing down over there performance against Liverpool...all unofficial of course?

6th September

Shearer in new link to Italy

Italian side Parma have made a £15 million bid for Alan Shearer according to the Gazzetta dello Sport. The Italian paper said that Parma had tried to buy the England captain in June but Newcastle wanted £22 million, they instead went after Fiorentina hitman Gabriel Batistuta. After the Argentinian decided to stay in Florence Parma went back to Newcastle after they had lowered there asking price. This may come as a shock to most Newcastle fans as the club said he was not available at any price, this claim in the Italian press may bring more trouble for teh Newcastle board.

Shearer Unhappy with Ref

England and Newcastle striker Alan Shearer blasted Italian referee Pierluigi Collina after he refused to give England a penalty in the last minute of there 2-1 defeat by Sweden. Shearer said " He was too frightened to give us a penalty. " I got in front of the defender and touched the ball away, and he kicked me down. For the life of me I can't understand why he hasn't given it."

England were given a dream start when Shearer scored from a free kick after only 2 minutes. England controlled the game for half an hour but the Swede's started to apply a little pressure towards the end of the first half and scored two lucky goals one scored by Newcastles Andreas Andersson, who I have not yet seen strike the ball cleanly. Englands problems increased when Ince was sent off for a second bookable offence after 63 minutes. Both Le Saux and Southgate had good chances to equalise and of course England were not given a blatant penalty at the end of the game. This game should have been won in the first half but England lost there control of the game, also I don't think Redknapp was fit enough. However England should beat the Swede's at Wembley next year.

4th September

Gillespie out to prove a point

Newcastles Irish winger Keith Gillespie is desperate to persuade new boss Ruud Gullit to offer him a new contract at St James park. Gillespie finally makes his return to the game after five months out playing for N.Ireland against Turkey. Despite his move to Middlesbrough falling through Gillespie seems keen to stay " I'm happt at Newcastle and I would be happy to stay. " I haven't had much contact with the new manager and I'll just have to wait and see what happens. " he added

Clarke speaks out on move

Newcastles new assistant to Ruud Gullit Steve clarke who arrived from Chelsea two days ago has admitted that he has still alot to learn, but he is looking forward to working at the club and with the players. "As soon as Ruud phoned me last Thursday, straight away I said 'yes' and it was just a matter of sorting things out from there. "It was obviously difficult to leave, I've been settled down there. 12 years at one club is a long time and I've made a lot of friends and have got some great memories of the place. "But in football things move on and I always it was the right time and the right move. "This club is massive. I've left a club that has won four trophies in the last couple of years so I must be coming here for a reason and the reason is that it is an ambitious club. "I think if you can be successful at Newcastle it will be a fantastic place to work."

2nd September

Hamann Injury Blow

Newcastle's German International Dietmar Hamann will miss the next two months of the season after damaging Knee Ligaments in the 1-4 defeat by Liverpool. Hamann will also miss the start of Newcastle's Cup Winner's Cup campaign.

1st September

Shearer to have talks with Gullit

Press rumours of an impending show-down between Newcastle's new boss and Alan Shearer have intensified. It is well known that Shearer had a close working relationship with Dalglish and he was unsettled by his departure. The exact nature of Dalglish's departure may effect the financial settlement.

Andersson Targeted by Celtic

North-East press reports have indicated that Celtic could be about to launch a £3 million bid for Newcastle striker Andreas Andersson. Wilkinson linked as Technical Director

Former Leeds Manager Howard Wilkinson has been aproached by Newcastle to become the director of football at the club. Wilkinson has been England's technical director for 18 months ever since he left Leeds. The proposal was already in the pipeline a few months ago after Dalglish had approved the idea. " I've no regrets about coming here. The only regret I have is that I've left. I won't be buying a doll and sticking pins in it," he said. The club have also confirmed that Terry McDermott has also left the club.

Dalglish said that when he was told he was leaving his job he thought he was being wound-up. " I heard late on Wednesday night but I thought someone was winding me up. " But when I was setting off from the north-west on Thursday morning I heard from the chairman. "I've read the statements, made by the club. I want to respond to it and give my side of the story. I feel the need to take legal advice first. " added an unhappy Dalglish.

There have been mixed feelings on Tyne-side over Dalglish's departure, quite a few fans said that they would have liked to see him stay a little while longer at the club. Most fans however seemed happy at the decision and see Gullit as the man to bring back the attacking football which Keegan spoilt the fans with during his 5 year spell at the club, as well as bringing trophies to St James. Gullit will be introduced as Newcastle manager tomorrow, it is unclear who will take over as his right hand man at Newcastle after McDermott leaving the club. Also Gullit will take charge of the Liverpool game unlike previous reports on this page.

Gullit Takes Charge

The Dutch star has taken control of the club after Kenny Dalglish had decided to resign after only 18 months in charge. Gullit is said to have signed a 2 year deal worth £1 million a year with the option of a 3rd year, he will not take charge of team affairs until after the Liverpool game on Sunday. Kenny Dalglish is to take legal advice before giving his side of the story for his departure from Newcastle after only two games this season. Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd said he expected new boss Ruud Gullit to take the club back to the top. Shepherd said " We believe we have the ideal person to replace Kenny Dalglish and to continue the clubs development. " Ruud's record suggests he is very well equipped to lead the team to the success to which we all aspire. "

Ruud Gullit's agents said the former Chelsea manager's new job ends a bitter six-month spell in exile. His agents said " Over the last six months it has been very difficult for Ruud because of some of the acerbic comments of Ken Bates. " It was a question of waiting for the right opportunity. Ruud turned down five jobs but this was the right one. "

23rd August
