TICKETS

A SELECTION OF TICKETS FROM (OR TO) PRESTON

These paper platform tickets were standard issue on the BR network in the early 80s. Spotters would need one to access the platform at most stations when ticket barriers were still in force.

At Preston, there was a ticket barrier on the foot bridge between platform 1/2 and the main concourse. Oddly, I don't remember there being a similar place for the "gripper" in the subway, and access to the other platforms was unrestricted.

I believe this is what is known as an Edmonson (Edmondson?) platform ticket.

If anyone can tell me more about the dates these were issued, I would be interested.

An "Area 22" Runabout ticket. This was one of two Runabouts which covered Preston. Between 1981 and 1985 I had several of these tickets and clocked up many miles in the process. Today, you can buy a Freedom of the North West Ranger ticket which is basically the old area 22 and area 2 combined. Currently, it costs £66 for 7 days or £54 for 4 days out of 8. That's 10 times the cost of the area 22 in 1983!

Whereas Area 22 covered mainly the lines radiating from the west of Manchester, Area 2 was provided access to a reasonable section of the West Coast Main Line. There was also the opportunity to take short trips from Carlisle to Dumfries which would often involve a class 26 or 27. Before Lockerbie became famous for the all the wrong reasons, it was the town at the northern limit of the Area 2 Runabout!

In In the early 80s, ticket inspectors on trains didn't carry ticket printing machines. That meant that travelling from Blackrod (my home station), which was un-manned, to Preston, involved one of these tickets. The hand written ticket would be scrawled either on the train or at the ticket barrier at Preston. In the latter case, that meant waiting for all the other passengers to get through the barrier so the "gripper" could issue these to a small queue of passengers who had arrived without having the opportunity to buy a ticket.

A different style of ticket, in this case issued from Wigan North Western.

Can anyone provide some information about the various types of ticket?

Do you have any older tickets which could be included here?
If so, please contact me via the feedback page.
