Perhaps
surprisingly, Preston
is currently without a rail link to Southport, but until the 1960s it had
two. The less-direct of the two which ran via Burscough was lost due to the closure of a small
chord, "Burscough Curve", at the crossing-point of the Preston-Ormskirk
and Wigan-Southport lines. There is currently talk of restoring Burscough
Curve, allowing Preston-Southport trains to resume after a 40 year
absence.
Sadly, the
more direct route, the West Lancshire
Railway, is now gone, probably forever, but the route via Burscough could
one day be reinstated.

For more information about this, and other closed lines in Lancashire, I
can recommend "Lost Railways of Lancashire" by Gordon Suggitt.
This is a recent book and is available in bookshops such as Borders and
WHSmiths in Preston.
