Recognised as a consummate concert performer, David creates a special rapport with audiences. Music critics have noted that he can always be relied upon to programme unusual and exciting pieces in his concerts. He has an extensive repertoire across the historical spectrum, specialising in English and French music of the Romantic and 20th Century periods. Major works recently performed include Eben’s Sunday Music, Dupré’s Passion Symphony, Messiaen’s La Nativité and Paul Creston’s Suite, Op 70. English composers of the 20th century such as Herbert Howells, William Mathias and Francis Jackson are frequently featured in his programmes, along with notable French and Belgian composers in the form of Franck, Jongen, Vièrne and Duruflé.
David also specialises in the accompaniment of major choral works in organ transcriptions. He has played many of the best known Requiems including those by Brahms, Duruflé, Fauré, Mozart, Rutter and Verdi; Masses by Charpentier, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini and Kodaly; Masses for 2 Organs by Langlais, Saint-Saens and Vièrne (all during the last year!); and assorted works such as Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Lobgesang, Elgar’s The Music Makers and Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem (a particular favourite of his!). Perhaps the two greatest tests of his technique and stamina were Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and Verdi’s Nabucco (complete concert performance).
On November 25th 2000, he will be accompanying massed choirs of the National Federation of Music Societies in a very rare performance of Sir Arthur Sullivan’s epic oratorio The Light of the World in the magnificent setting of Liverpool Cathedral.
Visits to other cathedrals during the year have included York Minster (August 7th-12th, with the Choir of Birkenhead School) and Winchester (August 26th-27th, with Poscimur), as well as several neighbouring cathedrals with the Northern Cathedral Singers of the RSCM. Going further afield, he was invited to visit Barcelona with the Liverpool Schools’ Orchestras (July 17th-24th) and Prague and Krakow with the Chester Children’s Choir (July 27th - August 4th).
David’s non-musical interests centre upon Transport. He is a keen photographer and observer of the Railway and Shipping scenes. He has amassed an extensive collection of Transport literature and colour slides over the last thirty years!
