Chard History Group (CHG) started in 1965, when about 30 people attended the first
meeting. It was decided that the Group's main objectives should be to promote research
into, and gain knowledge of, all aspects of the history of Chard and District. In this case,
district was defined as roughly the mid-point between Chard and its neighbouring local
history societies.

CHG works closely with the Chard Museum, with some members serving on both
committees. The Group has associate membership of the Somerset Archaeological and
Natural History
Society, which enables members to have access to their Member's Reference Library at
Taunton, and also to take part in the SANHS and Associated Societies' events. The Group
is also an Associate of the Council
for British Archaeology (SW), Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society and Somerset
Records Society.

Over the years, individual members have produced a number of books, guides, papers
and leaflets. They have also generously produced booklets about Chard for issue as
Group Publications that give a good introduction to the area. These are available from the
Secretary, tourist information centre, museum and local bookshops.

The Group also maintains a local history card index for help in answering the many
enquiries, and monitors sites under threat. In addition, the Group has helped to establish
a local history section at the new library and frequently adds to the museum collection.
In 1999, several events took place to mark John Stringfellow's Bicentenary.
