CHARD HISTORY GROUP - 2009

The following events start at 7.30pm at Redstart School, Chard (unless otherwise stated) and are usually on the second Friday of each month. The charge is £1.00 collected at the door (unless otherwise stated) and is to cover administration costs, room hire and speaker’s fee/travel costs. Visitors are very welcome (£1.50 admission). Jan. 9th AGM followed by a history quiz by member Chris Brewchorne

Feb. 13th Victorian Dress and dating your Photographs (bring them along), illustrated talk by Penelope Ruddock

Mar. 13th Famous Speeches read and commentary by Philip Knighton

Apr. 17th Chard Men in The Great War a talk by Stuart Roper

May 8th Annual Dinner at The Lordleaze Hotel Chard – 6.45 for 7.15pm. Our Guest Speaker will be Good King Hal (alias Mike Farley). Optional apparel is a sash or bonnet (vaguely Tudor to make Hal feel at home!)

May 15th at 7.30pm Guided tour of Chard School with John Stotesbury

July 14th Tuesday 9.00am Day Outing leaving Crowshute car park by coach to Chepstow town and visiting its very early and dramatic Norman Castle and (it is hoped) the Roman walled town of Caerwent). Tickets at £6 pp strictly no later than the previous meeting. In the event of bad weather, there may have to be some flexibility in the arrangements.

Oct. 9th HMS Formidable 1944, a talk by Jack Thomas

Nov. 13th An Evacuee in Chard, personal experiences by Margaret Cox

Dec. 11th Snowdon Tollhouse and similar renovations, an illustrated talk by Mike Pope. This will be followed by the usual popular seasonal refreshments.
