The walk starts from the Barrow (down) platform at Roose Station.
Turn left outside the station into Yarlside Road bearing left at the Ship Inn.
After a further 500 yards the residential area gives way to open countryside. Continue along Yarlside Road for about a mile, past Parkhouse Farm, by now Yarlside Road has become Parkhouse Road.
Turn off the road, following the signpost for Manor Road. You will cross Bow Bridge which is an ancient monument. Cross back over Mill Beck at a small footbridge, but keep to the left side of the field.
Go through the kissing gate and carefully cross the railway line, listening out for trains.
Follow the path and turn left onto the road which follows the boundary of Furness Abbey. Built in the 12th Century the extensive sandstone ruins are open to the public and are well worth a visit.
Continue past Abbey Tavern under the stone arch for a further 100 yards. A signpost (Mill Brow, quarter of a mile) is the start of a footpath through the Vale of Nightshade. First you will go through a tunnel under the railway line, then cross Abbey Road, following the cyclepath sign back into the valley.
Close to Dalton Junction you will pass under the railway line again. The Path comes to a picnic area on the outskirts of Dalton. Follow the road left up the hill past the Brown Cow, you will arrive at Market Place. The famous portrait artist George Romney is buried in the grounds of St Mary?s Church. Dalton Castle was built by the Monks of Furness Abbey in the Fourteenth Century to resist Scottish invasion, and was later used as a courthouse and prison. Follow Market Place onto Market Street through the Conservation Area and centre of the town.
Turn right into Station Road at Barclays Bank and walk up the hill. Dalton Station is next to the Police Station on Station Road.
