There are so many different walks to enjoy in and around Carlisle,
from historical town trails to quiet walks deep in the country.
To help you find out more a wide variety of guided walks and self-guided
walk leaflets are available.
Guided Discovery Walks introduce you to the splendours of the
Great Border City, past and present. You will enjoy fine views
of the Cathedral, Castle, old city walls, Guildhall Museum and
the Victorian market as you weave your way through cobbled lanes
and the pedestrianised city centre. Walks are run by Carlisle
City Council most days from Easter to September. Leaflets are
also available on town trails around Carlisle.
Carlisle City Council have also produced a series of leaflets
describing walks in the countryside surrounding Carlisle, accessible
on foot from the city centre. One of particular interest to travellers
on the Cumbrian Coastal Railway is the riverside trail following
the Caldew from Dalston to Carlisle, ideal for a linear walk using
the train in one direction. Good walking shoes advisable.
The countryside around Carlisle is one of contrasts, from the
open beauty of the Solway Firth, to the lush green valley of the
River Eden. A good network of buses plus two other scenic rail
lines, the Tyne Valley and Settle Carlisle give access to the
surrounding villages. East Cumbria Countryside Project produce
a series of walks booklets, with full details of beautiful country
walks, many of which are within easy reach of Carlisle including
walks in the North Pennines, Hadrian?s Wall Country, the Borderlands
and the Eden Valley. They also run a series of guided walks throughout
the year. For walks in the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty see the Solway Rural Initiative?s set of walks leaflets.
All the publications mentioned above, plus a wide range of other
walks leaflets and books are available from Carlisle Visitor Centre
in the Old Town Hall, ten minutes walk from the railway station.
