Enfield Lock

This is one of the more popular stretches of the river especially from peg no.1 upto the road bridge as you can park your car right behind you. As with almost all of the Lee this stretch is pole dominated.

The main species at Enfield are roach, perch, carp and skimmers. Roach are the predominant species throughout the whole of the season with skimmers and carp showing in the warmer months.

Although the most popular stretch is from peg no.1 to the road bridge it is well worth trying opposite the lock cutting (pegs in the 50's). In the warmer months plenty of skimmers can be caught during the morning whilst the carp will show once the sun gets up with roach available all day.

To catch the skimmers light tackle is essential, bear in mind that roach are also going to be showing. Main line would be Pro-Micron 0.08 to a 0.06 hooklength. Hook choice would be a Leeda Prism 7 light pole hook in a size 22. Initial feed would be 2-3 balls of groundbait (cupped in) with a further pot of dry groundbait on top so as to produce an instant cloud effect in the water. If I felt that the skimmers would show in any great numbers I might also introduce some finely chopped worm. Roach will probably show at first as they will have been attracted by the cloud but once the skimmers move in over the groundbait I would expect them to feed until late morning.

A light waggler up against the boards of the lock cutting is recommended for the carp. A word of warning, don't chuck a feeder out to the boards which seems to be popular with some of the locals, stick to the waggler and avoid creating too much of a disturbance. Loose feed can easily be fed to the area by using a catapult. Through out the whole of this stretch the carp have a tendency to stay near the farside as you cannot fish from the other bank so using light tackle for the skimmers and roach when you fish the nearside should not produce too many "incidents".

Baits are straight forward for Enfield, as with most of the Lee. Maggot, pinkies and squatts are all accepted along with caster, worm and breadpunch. However, you will probably find that you get a quicker response from a live bait than you would from a still bait such as caster especially during the winter.

Good groundbaits to use at Enfield are Sensas Roach and Van Den Eynde Supermatch. Once the fish are in the swim I would continue to loose feed only.

If you do fish opposite the boards use a light waggler, it will cause less disturbance.
