Hertford and The Meads

Main species include roach, perch, chub, bream and pike. This venue can be divided into two distinct types. From the car park to Hertford Lock the river is very narrow with moored boats on the far bank. There are not many swims along this stretch due mainly to the narrow towpath and the fact that most of the fish on this section are very shy and hard to catch. Apart from roach and perch there are also carp who tend to reside under the moored boats near the lock. When fishing this part of the venue a carefull approach is needed and tackle should be kept light unless you are going for the carp.

The section from where the River Beane joins down to the road bridge is ideal for trotting with a stick float or waggler slightly further out. Roach are definately the target species on this section. Take plenty of bait if you decide to fish this section as you will need to loosefeed every cast to keep the fish in your swim. Bites can take a while to come and it is not uncommon to have to wait 2 hours before you get your first bite. However, once the fish arrive , providing you keep loosefeeding they should stay in your swim for the rest of the day. The fish in this section are in excellent condition and it is likely that most of the fish you catch have never seen the inside of a keepnet before! Roach range anywhere from 4oz. upto 1lb. Best baits for this section are hemp, caster and bronze maggot. Swims worth a try are those just downstream of the pumping station (peg no. 46-49).

The fishing below the lock is much easier as there are purpose built platforms to fish from and plenty of space to lay your tackle down (on some of the pegs you can even pass a 10 metre pole back without having to unship any joints, a pole anglers dream!)
