TITANIUM AGAINST CORROSION AND «CORROSION PROBLEMS»
Up to 12 % of iron is annually
destroyed by corrosion.
Metals get destroyed in the open air, in water and under ground. In corrosive
media this process gets even more accelerated.
Metal protection costs are incredibly high.
This involves the use of additional covers and reinforcement of equipment walls,
which leads to price rise for equipment and processes.
The use of traditional metals is a source of endless problems: losses resulting
from corrosion, equipment shutdown for repair and production rate decline due
to equipment contamination.
TITANIUM IS A NEW MATERIAL BASIS FOR THE NEW CENTURY
Is there any way to free
a man from his slavery of eternal struggle with corrosion?
Yes, there is! There is not just a way, but a radical way to eradicate corrosion
– through the use of titanium.
Its properties are unique:
1 Low density at high level of mechanical properties (the highest specific strength);
2. High level of special characteristics such as heat resistance, low cycle
fatigue, fracture toughness, erosion and cavitation resistance, etc.;
3. Exceptional corrosion resistance in the majority of gaseous and liquid corrosive
media;
4. High melting point;
5. Non-magnetism;
6. High processability, including weldability, ability for alloy formation both
with light and heavy metals;
7. Shape memory effect for some of the alloys;
8. High physical properties: low modulus of elasticity, low linear thermal expansion
coefficient, low heat conductivity, cold-resistance at sub-cryogenic temperatures,
limited wetability;
9. Decorative properties due to wide range of surface oxidation colors;
10. High immunity to living tissues and bones;
11. High bactericidal properties;
12. High resistance to radioactive, neutron, heat, light and other types of
emission, and low induced radioactivity.
EXAMPLES of replacement
of equipment made of carbide materials with titanium equipment speak for themselves:
1. Four titanium heat exchangers at a chlorine plant replaced 30 old units made
of other type of material;
2. Service life of titanium fittings is 5-10 times longer than traditional type
of fittings.
3. Titanium coils in some media can serve for 10 years and more, while lead
coils – only 10 months.
Additionally, titanium coil is nearly 20 times lighter than lead and occupies
10 times less space.
4. Resistance of titanium pumps to corrosive media is 30-60 times higher than
cast iron.
5. Titanium fans used for gas vents in titanium and magnesium production operate
for five years, while steel- for not more than 1-2 months.
6. Service life of titanium gas ducts is 20-30 longer than any other type of
gas ducts.
7. Service life of titanium tubing for discharge of used pickling solutions
numbers dozens of years,
while carbon steel rubber-protected tubing last only for 1,5-3 months.
8. Titanium tanks for chromium plating last 5-7 times longer than the tanks
made of any other type of material.
9. Medical prosthetic devices made of titanium can permanently be present in
the organism, while steel prosthetic devices-for only as long as 10 years.
And finally, let us advert
to the Devine. If on the day Christ was born titanium plate were immersed in
the sea, by now it would have become thinner by 0. 02 mm (!). For comparison,
steel corrosion rate is 0.2-.25 mm per year.
Such examples expressively
substantiate the advantages of titanium over any other structural and corrosion-resistant
materials.
FIELDS OF TITANIUM APPLICATION
They are truly unlimited.
Among others, they include gas and petrochemical industries, power industry,
and metallurgy.
Titanium is a valuable material for pulp-and paper industry.
Chlorine dioxide, used to bleach cellulose, is a very aggressive material.
Titanium is the best solution for operation in this medium.
Titanium has been efficiently used in hydrolyzation and timber industries as
a material for production of caustic material processing units.
Electroplating – another field, where introduction of corrosion-resistant
titanium is especially advantageous.
Titanium is used in food industry for production of process equipment.
Titanium in medical industry is the unique material for both internal and external
prosthesis.
NEW VSMPO EQUIPMENT
Verkhnaya Salda Metallurgical
Production Association (VSMPO) - is the world largest manufacturer of titanium
and its products.
Unique combination of mechanical and corrosion-resistance properties of titanium
alloys allows to manufacture reliable heat exchanging equipment with service
life 10-20 times longer than similar type of equipment made of copper-containing
and chromium and nickel-base alloys.
The use of such titanium properties as pit corrosion resistance, has allowed
VSMPO to produce titanium tubes with the wall thickness of 0.6-1 mm. This ensures
high heat transfer intensity of heat exchangers. Non-cohesion of salts and organic
compounds to the walls of titanium tubes enables to maintain the preset thermotechnical
characteristics during the entire service life.
VSMPO-produced titanium tubes, resistant to general and pitting corrosion and
hydrogen sulphide- induced cracking, are successfully used in offshore petroleum
and natural gas production. VSMPO produces tubes for geological survey and well
drilling.
The range of products produced by the company is very extensive: water and steam-water
heaters, heating system water heaters, oil coolers, ejector coolers, evaporators,
ejectors, mixers, pump elements, fans, coils, tubing elements, scrubbers, elements
of gas ducts and chimneys, condensers, and chemical vessels.
With a wide range of starting materials in place, the company can ultimately
reduce the time of a unit assembly.
This allows to reduce the lead lime and equipment cost by 15-20 % compared to
similar types of equipment produced by other companies.
NORMATIVE BASE
VSMPO is accredited by
the Russian United Power Systems JSC for the manufacture of equipment designated
for power plants.
The company holds licenses granted by the State Nuclear Supervision Organization
for designing and manufacture of equipment for nuclear power applications, and
permission from the State Technical Supervision Organization to develop and
manufacture of pressure vessels.
Production of welded thin-walled tubes is certified.
RELIABLE PARTNERSHIP
Today VSMPO is the world
leader in titanium manufacture.
The majority of the world aerospace companies has approved the quality of its
products.
VSMPO holds 185 quality certificates and co-operates with 260 companies from
39 countries worldwide, including 1500 Russian partners.
High scientific potential of the company, profound knowledge of titanium alloy
properties and high professionalism characterize VSMPO as a reliable supplier
of equipment made from unique material, which has great future.
«Extensive application of titanium shall enable to respond to the main
challenge that civilization is facing today – emancipation from slavery
of Rusty Iron».
