A Tribute To One Of The Greatest Songwriters Of All Time


Even though he is only really remembered for two songs (American Pie and Vincent), Don McLean is still recognised as being one of the great songwriters of his generation. At a time when protest songs were being written left, right and centre, he penned tributes to Buddy Holly and Vincent Van Gogh which, along with his cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying", would be his biggest hits.

This page is meant as a tribute to Don McLean from a fan who was born long after his chart success had passed, yet was still moved by the timelessness of his music. It is unusual for a 19-year-old to like music such as Don's (especially considering the current trends in music are leaning back towards pop), but perhaps it is because his folk style of music is occasionally echoed by another of my favourite groups, Del Amitri, that I find his music pleasant on the ear.
