Spurs have been busy this close season, and have secured the services of a number of players who may well help the club in their first European campaign since 1992. NAGUAN GRAYEB (apologies for any spelling errors with that name!) was almost our first signing. The deal was practically done when, bizarrely, he failed a follow-up medical which showed signs of the potential for injury later in his career (?!). Spurs then tried to take him on a year's loan deal to see how he copes, but the deal fell through and he signed for Aston Villa (who obviously have a different method of conducting a medical).
The first actual Summer signing by George Graham was WILLEM KORSTEN, who had been on loan to Leeds United during the season, for £1.5m. Korsten can play as a left winger or as a centre forward, and this means we have finally got some quality cover for David Ginola. There was some controversy surrounding this signing, since Korsten was expected to sign for Leeds until Spurs made an 11th hour bid which left David O'Leary fuming. Such is life, as they say.
CHRIS PERRY made the short journey North from Wimbledon for a reported £4m, and he is expected to be the first choice partner for Sol Campbell this season. This signing means Spurs can now use Ramon Vega, John Scales and Luke Young as cover, which is a healthy position to be in. Perry is 26, and touted as being a future England international.
Spurs once again were involved in a farcical transfer situation when MICHAEL BRIDGES seemed to have signed after Spurs and Sunderland agreed a £5m fee for him, and he flew in to discuss personal terms. However, just weeks later he signed for Leeds saying he never had any intention of moving so far South to London.
Our final close-season signing was OYVIND LEONHARDSEN from Liverpool. He signed just in time to be allowed to make his debut against West Ham United on the opening Saturday of the season. Fans were disgruntled at another midfielder being signed considering the lack of fire-power up front with Les Ferdinand and Chris Armstrong both injured, but so far Leonhardsen has surprised a lot of people with his good performances right across the midfield area. A versatile asset indeed.
On the outgoing player front, ANDY SINTON and CLIVE WILSON have both found new clubs after their free transfers away from White Hart Lane, and RORY ALLEN has signed for Portsmouth in a £1m deal.
