Thailand 3 - Indonesia 2, September 1998, the Tiger Cup.
Both sides wanted to avoid meeting the host nation, Vietnam, in the semi-final. Indonesia needed a defeat to avoid meeting Vietnam. Thailand needed a draw to guarantee a semi-final spot, but wanted to avoid a win which would put them against Vietnam.
In the first half, both sides, already lacking several first-choice players, showed no intention to attack. On several occasions, the Indonesian goalkeeper actually went into the Thailand half to 'join in the attack', ultra-Higuita style. Naturally, that left his goal invitingly open for Thailand, but the Thais did not oblige.
The referee talked to both sides during the break and things got slightly better. Indonesia scored first. Thailand then equalised. Indonesia made it 2-1 in the 85th minute, then Thailand equalised again in the 89th. With time running out, the Indonesian players started passing backwards towards their own goal, and a defender scored with a low shot against his own goalkeeper, who moved away from the ball anyway. The scorer raised his hands in delight, so did several of his teammates. 3-2 to Thailand. Just to make it safe, from the kickoff, the Indonesian players surged into the Thailand half to prevent the Thais from emulating their magnificent feat!
