Call Hold & Call Waiting are services that mean you need not miss calls, even when you're on the phone. You can also easily put a caller on hold to make another call (perhaps to confirm a price or meeting time).
Call Hold allows you to put the current person on hold while you make another call. You can then swap from call to call as required. If you wish to speak to more than 1 person at the same time, you can use the Conferencing service that allows up to 5 people to be on the line at once.
Call Waiting gives you a subtle "beep" in your ear to signify that another person is trying to call you., along with their Caller ID if presented. You can then swap to the new caller and put the current person on hold (or drop the call altogether).
Even if you have two calls in progress, you will still get notified of a third person calling. However you will need to drop at least one call in order to answer it. Of course, at any time you can ignore the call and it will be diverted to the Answer Phone service (or any other number set up by a divert). A fourth caller will also be diverted immediately on the same basis.
Note: If you have a second line (See below), you cannot accept a call from the other line with Call Waiting. You must therefore drop the current call/s.

Conferencing allows you to speak to more than one person at the same time, which is all part of Orange's campaign to get people to communicate in groups - not just "one to one" (no pun intended!). Orange now allow this to be carried out easily from the majority of handsets in the Orange range.
In addition to yourself, you may speak to up to 5 more people simultaneously. These calls may be originated from your phone, or other incoming calls - there are no restrictions. You can even break away from the conference at any time to speak privately with any other member of the conference (the others are still able to communicate while this is happening).
Available on most of the Orange handsets, you can use conferencing for no extra subscription charge simply by requesting it from Orange Customer Services, on 150 (free of charge from your Orange) or 0973 100 150 from a landline.
Each call originated from your phone will be charged at the standard rate, while incoming calls joined in a conference will be free of charge (within the UK).
Call diversion (also known as Call Forwarding) allows you to send your incoming calls to another number. You pay for the divert as if you made the call yourself, but there is no actual charge to have the facility or to set up and cancel diverts. If you wish to divert calls on a regular basis using the "unconditional" divert (that is EVERY single call), you may wish to use the Every Phone service that allows diverts to many numbers free of charge.
By default, your Orange phone will already divert unanswered calls to the Answer Phone service. Of course, for various reasons you may wish to divert calls to another number, such as an office phone, your home or a colleague.
Your Orange phone includes options within the menu system to set up, interrogate and cancel diverts. However, to make things quick and easy for regular use, you can enter the diverts manually.
Mobile Data users should take a look at the Mobile Data section, where you can find out how to divert incoming data and fax calls.

For users who have traditionally been used to using pagers, whether in conjunction with a mobile phone or not, Orange Assistant offers a national paging system built into your phone.
This service is available to users of all Orange handsets and currently costs £20 (£23.50 inc.) per month (as well as a one off £10 (£11.75 inc.) connection fee). A bureau answers your calls, with a message set by yourself, then sends these messages to your phone via a text (SMS) message.
Unlike a pager, all messages are guaranteed to get through. If your phone is out of service, or switched off, you will receive the message as soon as you return to service.
The only thing to note is that calls diverted to your Orange Assistant service are NOT taken from your inclusive airtime unlike the voicemail service.
There is no minimum length of time for connection to this service.
Orange Messenger is basically the same sort of service as offered with Assistant, but without the personalised answering facility. However, you pay as you use the service (29.38p inc. VAT per message) and can easily turn it on and off. To enable the service, divert your incoming calls (see Call Diversion above to find out how to do this) to 0973 100 124. To disable the service, cancel the diverts or change the divert to another number (such as the Answer Phone service on 0973 100 123).
When roaming abroad, you must enable the unconditional divert as the service relies on Caller ID information to send the message to the correct phone.
Orange Messaging gives you mobile originated SMS (MO SMS) from your handset. It is automatically enabled for all new customers, so you should be able to use the service immediately.
You can send messages of up to 160 characters to any other Orange subscriber for the following cost:
Certain restrictions apply to sending messages, such as Line Two numbers, which will automatically give a "send failed" message. Other examples include sending messages from the Orange network to users on other networks, although this may change in the future with different networks agreeing to share messages.
Unofficially, you can use foreign service centre numbers to route messages to other mobile users - but this is never guaranteed to work and may work one day and not the next. The Orange service centre number is +44973100973 and works to all Orange numbers (excluding Line Two numbers as mentioned above).
At the time of writing (October 1998), Orange do not support the "Delivery Advice" facility that can confirm when a message has been delivered (but not necessarily read) by the recipient.
Like Orange Messaging, this service works in an extended form. Instead of sending a message to another Orange phone number - you send it to a "group list number", that contains a list of up to 25 other Orange users. You can create multiple group lists, and edit/delete them at will.
For each successfully delivered message, you will be charged the usual rate for sending a message. Therefore, sending a message to a group list that contains four Orange numbers will cost (on Talk 60), 4 x 5.88p (inc. VAT). You are also charged the standard rates to set up, edit and delete group lists.
While the broadcast message functions of the extended Answer Phone service will allow you to send one message simultaneously to up to 25 other Orange users for the price of one call, there will be the charge for each user to listen to the message (at 8.81p inc. per minute). Therefore, the overall cost of the Group Text Messaging service will still be lower - although of course, the cost now falls on the sender - not the recipient. It is also presumed that Orange kept the per-message-per-user charge to prevent some people from using this as a form of cheap advertising and spamming.
nn = a group list number from 50 - 59. NAME = A unique identifier for this list, useful for subsequent interrogation. nnnnnnn = Orange subscriber number, e.g. 44973208861.
You are also able to enter numbers as 0973nnnnnn, rather than in the international format shown in the above examples.
Orange allows the use of data for speeds of up to 9600bps. Most of the Orange handsets support mobile data. By using an Orange phone with a suitable data card or "soft modem"*, you can send and receive faxes and of course access online services and the Internet.
Calls are charged at normal rates and will come out of your inclusive airtime as applicable.
Incoming calls are made possible by registering two new numbers for incoming data and fax. This is free of charge.
We have a dedicated page for Mobile Data which will help you to find out what options are available for your handset or computer.
* Soft modems are a new range of data cards for PC's and some PDA's (such as the Psion Series 3c/5 and Windows CE machines). There is no requirement for a PC-Card adapter, as the emulation is carried out internally on the machine and connected to the phone via a standard RS232 serial cable. Such products supporting this include the Motorola mr602, Nokia nk402, nk503 and nk702.
NOTE: Since the off peak call charges were dropped (to 5p including VAT) this service has been suspended. Users who already have this service are currently able to keep it with no monthly charge.
This tariff was launched on the 12th February 1996, and offers users cheap calls at weekends (defined as midnight Friday to midnight Sunday).
For a subscription fee of £2.50 (£2.94 inc.) per month (in addition to the applicable talk plan rental) you get weekend calls charged at a flat rate of 5p (5.88p inc.) per minute. This is based on calls which are normally included in your inclusive airtime; which includes local, regional, national fixed phones and calls to other Orange handsets.
One major benefit is that calls made during the weekend will no longer be taken out of your inclusive airtime, which can enable users to save more money by "reserving" their inclusive airtime for peak rate calls. However, calls made during the standard off-peak times (7pm-7am Monday-Thursday, 7pm-midnight Friday & midnight-7am Monday) will still continue to be charged at the talk plan off-peak rates and will come out of your inclusive time as usual.
There is no minimum length of time for connection to this service.
The "Line Two" service gives you a second telephone number on the same phone. This can be billed separately which is ideal for businesses who can now allow members of staff to use the same phone but get billed privately for their own personal calls. Having a second line registered for a personal user can also prevent the subscriber being taxed on their mobile phone, as personal calls are paid for separately.
Having a second line on your phone offers virtually all of the same benefits as your standard line. This means you get a completely new Answer phone (the inclusive voicemail service) and a separate amount of inclusive minutes. The talk plan can also be different to that of your normal line and is discounted (excluding Everyday 20 which is charged at 50p per day as normal, including VAT.).
There is no minimum length of time for connection to this service, although a one off connection fee of £10 (£11.75 inc.) is required to activate a Line Two service.
While you get all of the benefits (Call Waiting, Answer Phone, Caller ID etc.) on Line Two, you cannot send or receive SMS messages or make data/fax calls from this line.
The only disadvantage of Line Two is that you are unable to switch between lines during a call. If someone calls you on the other line during a call (Call Waiting) you will have to hang up before you can answer it. However, the voicemail service will take this call for you if not answered.
For a more cost effective Line Two service for the occasional user, see Chat 60 below.
Chat 60 for Line Two allows users to get the most from their inclusive airtime, by reserving the existing time for peak rate calls only. For a one off connection fee of £10 (£11.75 inc.) and £5 (£5.88 inc.) per month thereafter (no minimum term), subscribers get the benefit of a low cost "Line Two" service, which also includes 60 minutes of off-peak calls.
You will receive a new telephone number for Line Two and will need to switch from line to line in order to use up the relevant airtime. Line Two can be used for normal peak calls at the rate of 25p/min (29.38p inc.) and off-peak calls after the 60 minutes are used will be charged to a landline at 4.25p/min (5p inc.) or an Orange mobile at 10p/min (11.75p inc.) at all times. Additionally, you will get a separate answering service and can use the line for splitting business and personal calls (as with a "standard" Line Two service, as detailed above).
As a guide, subscribers to Talk 30 and Chat 60 will receive 90 minutes for around £23.50 per month, in comparison to around £30 for Talk 60. However, remember that you can only make off-peak calls with the Line Two inclusive airtime!
Roaming allows you to use your mobile phone abroad in a variety of different countries that includes most of Europe and beyond - including Australasia and parts of the US. In some countries you may need a dual band handset, or rent a suitable handset (for use in USA) before travelling.
Handsets are initially barred from roaming, and subscribers must call 159 (free of charge) from their handset, or 0973 100159 from a non-Orange handset to get the service activated.
Although there is no setup charge, a deposit may be required to lift the international roaming bar.
Click here for more details on Orange Roaming, including the cost, methods of charging and future networks & countries to offer roaming. An informal guide can also be obtained at Rob Martin's guide to Orange roaming.
"Imagine sharing all of the benefits of Orange with your partner or your kids, staying in touch whenever you like. You'll be sharing inclusive minutes and saving money at the same time."
For the small businesses, large coporates or the husband and wife, you can now connect two or more phones to any of the Orange talk plans. This now includes three new plans designed for heavy users. All combined in one account with one monthly bill.
Orange will also waive the connection fee for additional phones, giving you a saving of £30 each time!
Talkshare Plus will be ideal for people who previously could not justify the cost of buying another phone with a completely separate connection fee and talk plan.
Corporates can save a small fortune by eliminating the problem where some users use up more minutes than are included, while other users are failing to use the pre-paid minutes up. Up to 50 handsets can be shared on the new Talk 5000 tariff that gives over 83 hours of inclusive minutes each month.
You can see how many handsets can be shared per talk plan by seeing the Orange Tariffs. (Click back in your browser to return here).
For example - you could have a new phone added to an existing Talk 60 account - at a cost of £12.50 (£14.69 inc.) per handset. Therefore, two phones sharing Talk 60 will cost £25 + £12.50 = £37.50 (£44.06 inc.). The saving on connection charges will also appeal to larger customers who wish to add up to 50 handsets to an account, and can now do so for just one connection fee of £35.00 including VAT.

Also including Wirefree Extension & PremiCell.
These services allow companies to have their Orange handsets linked in to their main switchboard and so is not designed for smaller users.
Some of the key features of "Orange Link" include;
Wirefree Extension adds more functionality to the system, allowing simple 4 digital extension numbers that can be moved from fixed to mobile phones. PremiCell is a new Nokia attatchment to any landline phone system that allows normal phones to use the Orange network. This means you can make calls from your normal fixed phone to another Orange handset at Orange to Orange rates. For a company with multiple Orange handsets, you can make significant savings in a very short time by avoiding the excessive charges levied by most fixed telephone networks for calling mobile phones.
PremiCell sells at a SRP of £650 including VAT and you can speak to us if you need further information. If you are interested in the other services, please contact Orange Corporate Services.
Orange have two major information services available, to help you obtain up to the minute information while on the move.
Firstly, the standard "177" Information service (Charged at Orange Premium Rate) gives you the ability to get news, sport, weather, share prices and lottery results over the phone using your phone keypad.
Secondly, you can request information by using the Orange Messaging (SMS) service. Now that the Messaging service is subscription free, you can easily send short "code words" to the same number, 177. Not only can you receive the same information but it is all conveniently delivered to you as a text message.
You also have further options available, such as the ability to request the information is sent whenever updated, or at regular intervals. Share Prices can also be programmed to alert when they drop below, or rise above, a set limit.
Further information on this service is obtainable by reading their official Press Release which also includes examples of how to use it and the costs.
A guide to the individual codes for the text based information service can be found at Rob Martin's 177 guide, or the official Orange Web Site.
Please note that numbers that are free from an Orange handset will not be free from other phones. All of the calls below, except calls to the emergency services, are charged at the equivalent BT "PCN" rate from any other network.

The Orange Answer Fax service acts like an Answer Phone for faxes, enabling colleagues, friends and customers to send you faxes while you're out and about. You can then retrieve your faxes when you want to at any standard rate UK fax machine, or on your laptop if you subscribe to the Orange Fax and Data service.
Answer Fax will notify you every time you have a new fax by sending a text message to your Orange phone. Then, when you call your Answer Phone it will guide you through with voice prompts at every stage on how to retrieve the fax - either to a pre-programmed destination or wherever you would like it to be delivered (anywhere in the world).
There no monthly charge for Answer Fax and no activation charge if you're already registered for Fax & Data. When an incoming fax arrives, you simply dial the number where you want your faxes delivered and they are sent and charged at the appropriate call charge for your (line one) Talk plan.
A full user guide can be found at; http://www.uk.orange.net/answerfax/index.html.
With a computer connected to your Orange phone, you can have wirefree access to computers and other services via ISDN when you're out in the field. Orange ISDN Access offers faster call setup times than calls made to services on standard telephone lines - and so keeps call charges to a minimum.
To take advantage of Orange ISDN Access, you will need to be an Orange Fax and Data user. There is no additional monthly fee. You only pay for the time you use. Calls are charged by the second at your Talk Plan standard rate, and can be part of your inclusive minutes. Premium and international numbers are not available.
To make an ISDN call, simply dial the Orange ISDN Terminal Adapter on 198 via your Orange phone. You can then dial the ISDN number of the service you wish to access using standard software.
End to end call setup time can be reduced to about 8 seconds instead of around 30 seconds via a modem. This keeps call duration to a minimum and saves you money.
The speed of data transmission is 9600 bps using V.110 rate adaption only, although V.120 is planned for the future.
Every Phone enables you to receive all your incoming Orange calls on any telephone in the UK. Its very easy to set up, from any phone, with one quick call to 330 from your Orange phone, or 0973 100 330 from a non-Orange phone.
Every Phone is of great use in situations when it is not convenient or possible to receive calls on an Orange phone. For example, a business customer working away from the office may choose to receive calls on a fixed phone to conserve their phones' battery, or office workers may prefer to receive their Orange calls at work more discretely on their desk phone. It will also be invaluable if your battery goes flat or if you accidentally leave your phone at home.
More information can be found at; http://www.uk.orange.net/services/every_phone.html.
It's simple and quick to use, just dial 330 from your Orange phone. Calls costs 7.5p exc. VAT per minute (8.81p inc. VAT).
You can also set up Every Phone by calling 0973 100330 from any phone.
Give out just one contact number, your Orange Phone number. With Every Phone, you can always receive your calls, giving you and your callers the confidence to rely on just one phone number - your Orange number. Its simple and easy for your callers, and gives you the choice where and how you receive your calls.
Because you can receive your Orange calls on any phone number, someone else can use your Orange phone for outbound calls. So, if a colleague is going to a meeting and may need to make a call, or a family member's out for the evening and wants to call you for a lift later, with Every Phone they can use your Orange phone and you don't have to miss a call. All you have to do is forward all your incoming calls to the nearest fixed line phone and your Orange phone is then free to use to make calls.
