About The Region - The Purple Perigord
![]() |
La Roche is situated right in the centre of what has recently become known as the Purple Perigord. A thriving wine growing area, the landscape is striped with the vineyards of Bergerac, Pecharmant, Montbazillac and Saussignac, merging into the famous St Emilion on the western borders of the region. Ten thousand hectares of vines stretch along the |
| meandering Dordogne, and
there are many chateaux open for wine tasting (dégustation) and
direct purchase. |
|
| The region is steeped in history. For example, there are many pre-historic sites, including some famous cave paintings. There is a variety of chateaux and gardens, not forgetting the many Bastide towns all worthy of a visit. | ![]() |
| Renowned for its wine, the region also
offers wonderful gastronomic delights. The many auberges and
restaurants in the locality offer ample opportunities to savour the
foies gras, preserved duck and goose, along with the local fish and cep
or girolle mushrooms. Leisure pursuits are also prominent in the area; whether you wish to play a round of golf, go horse riding or canoeing on the Dordogne, there is a lot to choose from. France is also known for its basins de loisirs where the whole family can spend the day enjoying various watersports. A visit to the local tourist office in Eymet will provide lots of ideas. |

The Local Bastide of Eymet Nestling in the crook of the river Dropt, the medieval city of Eymet marks the southern entrance to the Perigord region. Founded in 1270, the bastide of Eymet has witnessed a stormy past and was at the centre of historic rivalry between the French and English. Today, it boasts a 13th century castle, Roman bridges, houses under arcades, and facades built with wooden beams which are still in evidence around the central |

| square. It also has several
restaurants, shops, cultural and sports facilities, as well as an
excellent tea shop set in a truly picturesque and tranquil environment. For shopping, there are several excellent hypermarkets in Bergerac, but for daily french bread there is a local shop about 2km from La Roche. |
