William Nicholson

Nicholson was born in Dumfries on 15 August 1782 and became a travelling packman nicknamed "Wandering Wull" who would sing his own songs while going on his travels, the best known of these being the nursery rhyme "Aiken Drum". Nicholson's work became widely popular through being published in the Dumfries and Galloway Courier, but he took to drink and died in poverty on 16 May 1849. AC
