The castle was started in timber on a motte in 1067 and continued over next 2 centuries. The well preserved stone keep was built by the end of the 11th century and the Barbican was added in 1295. The castle was badly damaged in 1643 during the Civil War seige.
The residential area is predominantly Victorian.
