BARNARD CASTLE

A large castle built in 1130 on a hill overlooking the River Tees. It was seized by the Bishop of Durham in 1296 who added the Hall, the cylindrical keep and 4 baileys. The castle was slighted in the Civil War.

English Heritage open all year.
